April 2019 Newsletter

Do you find art healing and enriching?

Recently, I wrote a paper about art therapy for one of my Antioch University classes. Numerous scientific studies have found how beneficial art is for our emotional and physical health.

For example, one study tested the anxiety levels of two groups of college students, before and after they were asked to complete either a word puzzle or an art project. Although both activities were distracting, anxiety levels decreased only in the students involved in art. The more we learn, the more we realize how good art is for us.

I hope your April is filled with wonderful art.

Upcoming Shows and Appreciation

Thanks to the generosity of Julianne Martin, a gifted artist and collector of my paintings, I will be having an exhibit in Santa Barbara's Gallery 113 during the month of April. The name of my Exhibit is "Expressions," and it will feature both oil pastels and acrylics in the blue and green palettes, including Blue Flame and  Serenity shown above.

The First Thursday reception -- with music, food, and beverages -- will be on April 4 from 5 to 8 pm, at 1114 State St (La Arcada Court, Suite 8). Hope to see you there! And, thank you again, Julianne.

Also, two of my acrylics, Working Together and Mysteries Within, will be on display in Santa Maria at the Betteravia Gallery (511 E. Lakeside Parkway) until September. Working Together won second place in this excellent show, which is co-sponsored by the Santa Barbara County Arts Commission and the Abstract Art Collective.

New Art and Quote of the Month

As I mentioned in my last newsletter, I am starting to add beautiful metallic acrylics to many of my new paintings. Two recent paintings are shown above: Wipeout and Resolving. Both of them gleam because of the metallic whites and silvers, and remind me of sunlight on and within water.

My quote of the month is from Brenda Ueland, and it helped me come up with the name for my April art exhibit at Gallery 113 (Expressions): "Everybody is talented because everybody who is human has something to express."

Thank you for reading my newsletter and for supporting original contemporary abstract art. As always, I appreciate hearing from you.

Warm regards,
Andrew
