Volume 91: February 15, 2019

It’s a short issue this week as we’re out for Valentine’s Day during our normal writing hours. But speaking of Valentine’s Day, we’re super excited to share some cool updates our friends have been working on, too. Read on and support our AANHPI family!

By the way, we’re still looking for more writers, particularly those interested in writing about South Asian, Southeast Asian, and Pacific Islander issues. Is that you? Let us know by replying to this e-mail.

This Valentine’s Day, join us in supporting the Asian women in our lives by contributing to The Cosmos' crowdfund campaign! The Cosmos is raising $75,000 to fund The Cosmos Summit: a historical gathering for 500 Asian women creators to connect authentically, learn from and support one another, and create the representation Asian women deserve.

The Cosmos has 30 days to reach their goal and a $175 contribution gets you the most discounted GA Ticket for the Summit! Check out all the cool reward tiers and make a contribution today.

Our friends at Slant’d are now accepting story idea submissions for Issue 03 of their literary print magazine! Slant’d publishes non-fiction stories in the form of personal essays, short stories, poetry, photography, and illustration.

This issue, the theme is “Taboo,” shining a light on seemingly forbidden behaviors in the Asian American community, from interracial dating to getting plastic surgery to seeking therapy. If that inspires you, submit your story idea by March 1, 2019. Read on for details.

(And by the way, Slant’d launch tour for issue 02 is headed to New York City on March 2. Get your tickets today. Use the code SLANTDFAM19 for 25% off!

  • LEARN TO MAKE BAO FROM A BOX with School of Wok, a new Kickstarter project by Chef Jeremy Pang. Formerly a mobile cookery school in London, School of Wok aims to go global with its boxed bao kits. Each kit comes with everything you need to make great baos ... just add meat. Think of it as actually delicious Hamburger Helper.

  • STARE SLACK-JAWED at The Kinjaz' latest choreo video, set to Post Malone's "Sunflower"—a.k.a. Miles Morales' favorite jam in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Lead choreographer Vinh Nguyen continues to kick ass after all these years, and we're here for it.

  • GO ACROSS THE UNIVERSE with the next jukebox movie musical, Yesterday. Himesh Patel plays Jack Malik, an aspiring singer-songwriter who suddenly wakes up in a world where The Beatles never existed—and he's the only one who remembers their songs. What would you do? Probably what Malik does. Check it out and hope it's better than that one film with the guy from 21.

  • CELEBRATE BIOCULTURAL RESTORATION thanks to a special issue of Sustainability, a journal of environmental, cultural, economic and social sustainability which will be "the largest collection of scientific publications made by Native Hawaiians." That establishes Hawai'i as a leader of one field that we're probably all thinking about constantly in 2019.
See ya next time.
