February 2019

In Memoriam

The staff and Board of Trustees of Bancroft Library would like to recognize Catherine (Kay) McEachron, former library director, for her 16 years of service to our library. She was much admired and was dedicated to the library. We offer our condolences to her family.

Notes of interest:

As was mentioned in last month's newsletter, we have been working making some changes which we consider to be very important in regards to our service to the community. Two main items which we're considering are expanding our library hours, and enhancing the internet service we are able to offer.

We're proposing to increase our hours to the following schedule, which is based on recent survey data:
Monday... 1 - 6 PM (an increase of 1 additional hour)
Tuesday... 1 - 8 PM (an increase of 1 additional hour)
Wednesday...10 AM - 6 PM (an increase of 5 additional hours)
Thursday...1 - 8 PM (an increase of 1 additional hour)
Friday...1 - 6 PM (an increase of 1 additional hour)
Saturday...10 AM - 2 PM (an increase of 1 additional hour)
This schedule adds a total of 10 hours to our current schedule, and we've attempted to make the hours more uniform throughout the week. We would open at either 10 AM or 1 PM each day, and we would close at either 6 PM or 8 PM each weekday.

The Salem Central School District budget vote is coming up in May, and you will be seeing an increase in the amount of money requested in the Bancroft Public Library Proposition to fund these changes. Stay tuned for further details in the coming months leading up to the budget vote.

Bancroft Public Library Board meetings are open to the public. These meetings are typically scheduled for the first Tuesday evening of each month, at 6:30 in the Reading Room at the Library. Please feel free to attend and learn more about what is happening at the Library!

Website reminders:  We have created a Proudfit Hall Usage page on our website, so now you can view our Proudfit Hall Rental-Usage policy, access the Rental-Usage Agreement Form, see a calendar of when the space is available, and find contact information for reserving the space.

In case you didn't know, another feature of our website is that we have links to all of our public policies and our current budget. To find these, when you are on our website, if you hover over the "About Us" tab at the top of the page, you'll see a drop-down menu which includes these items. Simply click on what you're interested in viewing.
P r o g r a m s:
Are you interested in participating in our Program Planning Committee? If so, contact Susan at or 518-854-7463.

Another volunteer opportunity: Speaking of planning programs, we would very much like to offer Adult Craft Nights on a regular basis - either monthly or every other month. We need some help to be able to do this, though. If you would be willing to offer a craft program, no matter how simple, please get in touch with us to chat. We're hoping that we can pull together a small team of crafters to make this happen. We can provide materials if you can offer your time and experience.

As we try to plan some Adult Craft Nights, we could use your feedback! Please fill out our brief "Craft Night Survey" to help us know what kinds of crafts to offer. Thanks!

Regular Club Meetings:
  • Book Club meets the first Tuesday of every month at 2 PM (see flyer below).
  • Scrabble Club meets every Wednesday from 10 AM until noon.
  • An informal, creative writers' group meets at 6:30 PM the first and third Thursdays of every month. Anyone interested can attend!
  • Chess Club meets every Saturday from 10 AM - 1 PM.
All are welcome! Check our calendar, call the library (518-854-7463) or stop in for details.
Check out our February Break program schedule!
Don't forget about our Makerspace!
