School District Budget Vote Coming Up on May 21st

At Bancroft Library, we are hoping to expand our services to the community. As requested by patrons, our goal is to extend our library hours and make available increased internet bandwidth. We are also planning to provide information and referral services for the mental health/social services needs of the community. The Library Director has a Master of Social Work degree and, in cooperation with other community agencies, would be offering these services.

We're proposing to increase our hours to the following schedule, which is based on recent survey data:
Monday... 1 - 6 PM (an increase of 1 additional hour)
Tuesday... 1 - 8 PM (an increase of 1 additional hour)
Wednesday...10 AM - 6 PM (an increase of 5 additional hours)
Thursday...1 - 8 PM (an increase of 1 additional hour)
Friday...1 - 6 PM (an increase of 1 additional hour)
Saturday...10 AM - 2 PM (an increase of 1 additional hour)
This schedule adds a total of 10 hours to our current schedule, and we've attempted to make the hours more uniform throughout the week. We would open at either 10 AM or 1 PM each day, and we would close at either 6 PM or 8 PM each weekday.

Information and referral services are tentatively planned to be offered on Thursday evenings or by appointment. "Information and referral" means connecting people with existing community resources which can help them with challenges they may be facing (housing, mental health, substance abuse, care giving, etc.). 


You will see the following on the school district budget vote, which happens on May 21st:
“BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Education of the Salem Central School District
is hereby authorized to increase by seven thousand six hundred and 00/100 dollars ($7600.00),
for a total of twenty-eight thousand six hundred nineteen and 00/100 dollars ($28619.00) annually,
the appropriation to the Bancroft Public Library, and to add to the levy the necessary tax thereof 
beginning with the 2019-20 school year."

The appropriation we are presenting to voters is the least amount we feel would be necessary to cover these new expenditures along with the resources and programs that patrons currently enjoy. For the average property owner in the Salem Central School District, this increase represents a total library tax of around $22 per year, or about a $5-6 increase over last year’s tax. This means that for less than the cost of a hardcover book, we would be able to provide these expanded services to our community.

Bancroft Public Library Board meetings are open to the public. These meetings are typically scheduled for the first Tuesday evening of each month, at 6:30 in the Reading Room at the Library. Please feel free to attend and learn more about what is happening at the Library!

 
Mobile DMV site moving to the Library/Proudfit Hall
 
Starting Tuesday, May 21st, the Washington County mobile DMV site in Salem will be relocating to Bancroft Library/Proudfit Hall. Hours for the mobile DMV services will be 9:30 AM - 3:00 PM on the third Tuesday of every month. The scheduled Tuesdays are as follows:

November 19, 2019
December 17, 2019

Mobile sites CANNOT process the following transactions:
  • real IDs or enhanced licenses
  • permit originals
  • license reciprocities
  • restricted or conditional licenses
  • CDL permit tests
  • new photos on regular license renewals *please note that in most cases the photo on file can be used*

Fun for the teens in your life...
The first Friday of every month we're doing a "Teen Takeover" of the Library. Our next date is June 7th, and we'll be doing a "Nailed It"-type challenge with marshmallow pops! Send the kids (ages 12 and up) to come in and check it out!
Regular Club Meetings:
  • Book Club meets the first Tuesday of every month at 2 PM (see flyer below).
  • Scrabble Club meets every Wednesday from 10 AM until noon.
  • An informal, creative writers' group meets at 6:30 PM the first and third Thursdays of every month. Anyone interested can attend!
  • Chess Club meets every Saturday from 10 AM - 1 PM.

Do you know about our Story Time bags?
 
We have a total of 17 Story Time bags. Each bag contains 4-5 picture books and a few activities related to a theme. The bag themes are:

The bags can be checked out with your library card, so you can do story time at home with your little ones!

*Our Story Time bags were funded by the Friends of the Library and the Stewart's Shops Holiday Match grant.

Website reminders:  We have a Proudfit Hall Usage page on our website, so you can view our Proudfit Hall Rental-Usage policy, access the Rental-Usage Agreement Form, see a calendar of when the space is available, and find contact information for reserving the space.

Remember, we have seven computers available for public use, all of which are connected to a printer. We also have a wireless printer/copier/scanner/fax machine. We are here to help!

Bancroft Library offers Notary Public Services. Library Director Susan Getty is a certified Notary Public. Inquire at the desk for details.

There will be a special Library Board meeting on Thursday, May 23, 2019 at 6:30 PM. Representatives from John K. Waite Associates, Architects PLLC will be presenting preliminary information on the alterations necessary to bring the Bancroft building into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The services of this architectural firm (the same who have done work at the Salem Courthouse) are funded by a grant received by the library. Any changes made to the building as a result will also be grant funded.

The next regular meeting of the Bancroft Public Library Board of Trustees is scheduled for Tuesday, June 4th @ 6:30 PM. 

Regular monthly meetings of the Library Board are typically held on the first Tuesday of each month at 6:30 PM at the library. Meetings are open to the public. Previous meeting minutes are available on our Board of Trustees web page.
