What An Amazing Month It Will Be!

Here in the North American territory, we have brothers who have finished their associate degree in humanities and are graduating and leaving soon for philosophy in Rome, brothers finishing their novitiate and preparing for first vows, young men in a summer discernment program which precedes a decision to join the novitiate in the fall, four Legionary brothers being ordained deacons and five Legionary deacons being ordained priests. Truly God has blessed the Legionaries of Christ and Regnum Christi family in abundance!

Although COVID-19 restrictions prevent us from celebrating these events together we are making every effort to live stream the ceremonies and post videos. Links are included in the articles below. Please keep all the brothers, fathers, and their families in your prayers. We are so very grateful for their response to God's call!

Congratulations to Our 23 Graduates from Humanities

In the video above, the brothers share with us their experiences at the Legionaries of Christ College of Humanities. These brothers comprise ten of the twenty-three 2020 graduates. They are from Argentina, Canada, Chile, Columbia, Germany, Mexico, Nicaragua, United States, and Venezuela.

After completing 2 years of novitiate in their own countries and making their first vows, Legionary brothers come from around the world to the college in Cheshire to study for an Associates of Arts degree in Humanities. To be awarded the degree, students must complete 60 credits of undergraduate work.  As you will hear in the video a big challenge for many of the brothers from foreign countries is to begin taking classes in English while still in the process of learning English.  In addition to their native language, Legionaries also learn to speak Spanish and English.

Please keep the brothers in your prayers as they leave to begin the study of Philosophy at the Pontifical College Regina Apostolorum in Rome, Italy.
Enjoy this video from Br. Luis Felipe, his enthusiasm and joyfulness is contagious!

Perpetual Profession of Vows  |  August 20

Br. Luke Rawicki, LC (first pew, 2nd to the left) and ten other brothers made their perpetual profession of vows (life long vows) on June 27, 2020.
Nine years after making their first profession of vows, Legionary brothers make their perpetual profession of vows. Br. Andrew Torrey, LC and Br. Luke Rawicki, LC, co-creators of the “Thank God it’s First Friday!” podcast, are among them.  There will be 23 brothers from around the world making their perpetual profession of vows this year!  Br. Luke and ten others professed on June 27, 2020 and Br. Andrew with five of his brothers will be professing on August 20, 2020.

The idea of the “Thank God it’s First Friday!” podcast was born after a 30-day retreat last fall, when the brothers decided they wanted to do something to introduce more people to the mystery of God’s mercy. Since first Fridays of the month are traditionally devoted to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the unconditional mercy of God, they focused their project around them, and they envision their fun and energetic podcast as a message of hope.

The podcast is available on Apple PodcastsSpotify, and Google Podcasts.

Diaconate Ordination  |  August 15

Br. Vinh Pham, LC, Br Seth Sabata, LC, Br. Michael Sester, LC, and Br. Russell Ward, LC will receive the sacrament of Holy Orders through ordination to the Diaconate on August 15, 2020 at Notre Dame Parish in Michigan City, Indiana. This sacred moment in the life of a Legionary of Christ is a significant step following fourteen years of formation, and a final stage before ordination to the priesthood.

You can show your love and support for the new deacons by viewing the ceremony livestream on the Legionaries of Christ Facebook Page.

29 New Legionary Priests Being Ordained

Around the world 29 deacons of the Legionaries of Christ have had their priestly ordination plans changed by the COVID-19 pandemic.  The original plan was for all 29 to be ordained, with their families and friends present, on May 2, 2020 at the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls in Rome, Italy.  Because of constraints on travel and needs for social distancing, the deacons are now being ordained in the countries that they are from or are currently working in, by local bishops and cardinals, with limited attendance, and live streaming for those who cannot be there with them in person.

Five of the deacons are from the North American Territory; Deacon Kramer Cameron (Nova Scotia, Canada), Deacon Kevin Gillis (Nova Scotia, Canada), Deacon Christopher Gronotte (Kentucky, USA), Deacon Jamie Lorenzo (Manila, Philippines), and Deacon Santiago Mejía (who was born in Colombia but grew up in Florida, USA).  Read more

Follow the Candidates' Journey

Br. Felipe Chavez, LC,  Fr. Simon Devereux, LC, Br. John Van Dorpe, LC, and Fr. Edward Hopkins, LC with the candidates.
The Candidacy program is a three-month period where young men from the USA and Canada come to live in the seminary in Cheshire to discern if they are called to be a priest and religious with the Legionaries of Christ.  This summer there are eleven candidates who have opened their hearts to Jesus and said 'yes' to following Him. The candidates' daily routine includes prayer, sacraments, Adoration, classes about the vocation to priesthood and religious life, work, and sports.  This program, which is a prerequisite for joining the novitiate, is directed by an experienced Legionary priest, and personal spiritual guidance is offered by the Legionary priests.

On Sunday nights Fr. Simon Devereux, LC livestreams on the LC Candidacy Facebook page conversations or "Convos with the Candidates." Candidates tell us a little bit about where they are from, what inspired them to discern the priesthood and their candidacy experience.

One candidate expressed, “it has been such a blessing to be able to receive Jesus, go to Adoration daily, have guided morning meditation. I love learning how to pray. I think it is so important, that our prayer is our relationship with God, and the Eucharist being the height of the prayer. These are some of my favorite parts and just being with the other guys who are striving for the same thing, wanting to do God’s will, it has just been amazing!  We are having everything that is amazing here and only good can come from that.  I am learning a lot about myself that I didn’t know when I came in and I am so glad I was here to learn those things regardless if I am called to be a priest.”

This young man continues, “the door is closed until you take that step and discernment starts when you take that step, you can’t just stay in your mind all the time.”

Fr Simon congratulates the candidate for taking that step and adds, “Jesus says, come follow me and you don’t know where He is leading but the important thing is to be with Him. God isn’t playing. He has a plan for our lives, and He would love to tell us all what that is.  We just need to put ourselves in a position to hear him and that is what you are doing here in the candidacy.”

Special Novena to Mary the Queen of Heaven |  August 14

In his 1954 encyclical "To the Queen of Heaven," Pius XII points out that “Mary deserves the title because she is Mother of God, because she is closely associated as the New Eve with Jesus’ redemptive work, because of her preeminent perfection, and because of her intercessory power.”
