February 2021
Dear friends,

This is the first newsletter after fully transitioning to the new International Coordination 2021-2023, and I would like to start by thanking you for your support and hoping for a fruitful couple of years! I also would like to thank Ana Afonso and Gisela Pinheiro for joining me in this challenge.

I am extremely enthusiastic to design and implement a programme for the coming 2 years for the DESIS Network, one that intends to build on the work developed by the previous IC, but tailored to meet the challenges of emerging realities. In the light of new developments and changes, the DESIS network must adapt itself, redirecting its activities to a new wave of social innovations, that while centred on environmental issues, is not oblivious to the intricate web of interrelated economic, cultural and political implications.

Starting 2021 amidst troubled times, we must reflect on the discussions of last year’s assembly and seek a clear focus to support DESIS thrive.

Challenging times are upon us, but I believe we will manage to make a relevant contribution.

Best regards and stay safe,
Teresa Franqueira

A new beginning
(by Ezio Manzini)

"At the DESIS Assembly on 9 December 2020, we discussed a great deal about what has been done and what should happen now. The synthesis is simple to say, but not as simple to put into practice: if the world has changed, DESIS must change too. That is, in the face of what has happened and is happening, it is not just a matter of adding new experiences to what has been done so far, but of changing the framework in which we act, redefining what we are, what we do and how we do it."
DESIS Statements 2020: a collaborative movement for the future
(by Teresa Franqueira)

"A process launched with the DESIS Conversations 2020 – an initiative to discuss the present and the future of social innovation, design and DESIS itself. A DESIS Manifesto started to be written afterwards in a collaborative and open process with all DESIS Labs. To capture the evolving nature of the document, it was renamed DESIS Statements 2020."
International Coordination Action Program 2021-2022
(by Teresa Franqueira)

"The new IC proposal is based on three pillars and seeks to address environmental and ecological issues, and also to move the network towards activities based on social justice. Besides that, we intends to promote a few new initiatives for different, but related, topics, like “Talks for the Planet” to raise a sustainability perspective; “Bring a Friend” invitation, to promote DESIS and amplify its range; and the “DESIS Café”, a moment of informal conversations to foster community building within the network."
