Take Action Thursday!

Fellow Engagers -

Protests against police brutality (and federal overstepping) continue to rage in Portland, Oregon. Sit-ins at New York City Hall are ongoing. Bills to end police violence are happening in legislatures across the country, including here in Massachusetts.

But more needs to be done. And it starts with opening your heart and listening to your neighbors.

Cape Verdeans are one of the oldest immigrant communities on Cape Cod, yet for decades, they've been invisible. Case in point: they haven't been allowed to put up a sign advertising their business, the Cape Verdean Club, at the junction of Route 28 and Sandwich Road. Call it a little thing, but it's one thing too many after all the prejudice Cape Verdeans and other people of color experience daily in schools, town offices, and courts. Yes, right here in Falmouth.

You're invited to listen, learn and march in solidarity with the Cape Verdeans this Saturday. Wear a mask, and bring an open mind and ears. From there, we can work together to correct the injustices that may not make headlines, but impact everyday lives.

Police Reform: Keep up the Pressure!

Last week, the Massachusetts State Senate passed a major racial justice and police accountability bill that would make it harder for cops to claim "qualified immunity" - despite intense pressure from police unions.

The House is set to vote on its version of this bill (H.4860) this week. It's time to tell our reps to pass the strongest bill possible. Reforms are meaningless if there are no consequences for abuse.

The ACLU of Massachusetts is supporting several key amendments and opposing others, such as to study - rather than end - qualified immunity and weaken regulation of facial recognition technology. They're also making it easy for you to contact your reps about this bill. Find out more and let your reps know you are watching!

Tell your rep you want strong police accountability!
