Hill Headlines

House to Vote on Bill to Support the Postal Service The House will vote this Saturday on the Delivering for America Act, which prohibits the United States Postal Service (USPS) from implementing any changes to operations or level of service it had in place on January 1, 2020. This proposed legislation would bar the USPS from implementing any changes to operations or level of service, closure or consolidation of any post office or reduction in hours, and would allow for overtime. The vote will include a $25 billion funding boost for the Postal Service.

Legislative Updates

Hearing on USPS Oversight  The House Committee on Oversight & Reform announced a hearing with Postmaster General Louis DeJoy on August 24th. The hearing is a response to a recent USPS memo regarding the organizational changes, hiring freeze, early retirements, and regional downscaling.

Senate GOP “Skinny” COVID-19 Relief Package Senate Republicans have circulated a smaller version of their COVID-19 relief package. The bill would provide $300 a week in unemployment benefits, funding for schools, and $10 billion in funding for the Postal Service.  The bill, which has not been formally released, does not include stimulus checks included in the Republican proposed HEALS Act.

Letter Sent to FBI Calling for Investigation on USPS Representatives Ted Lieu (D-CA-33) and Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY-8) sent a letter to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to evaluate if the Postmaster General DeJoy or Members of the Board of Governors of the USPS had committed any crimes in light of delays and operational issues with the Post Service.

On the Postal Service:

“Our Postal Service should not become an instrument of partisan politics, but instead must be protected as a neutral, independent entity that focuses on one thing and one thing only—delivering the mail.  Millions of people rely on the Postal Service every day to communicate, to access critical medications, and to vote."

— Representative Carolyn Maloney
(D-NY-12)

“We have again made clear to the Administration that we are willing to resume negotiations once they start to take this process seriously. The lives and livelihoods of the American people, as well as the life of our democracy, are at stake.“

— Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy
(R-CA-23)
