Congress Approves Final Tax Reform Bill: Both chambers of Congress voted for final passage of H.R.1, commonly known as the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. The bill includes tax cuts of $1.5 trillion over ten years, simplification of the tax code’s income brackets, and a repeal of the Affordable Care Act’s health insurance mandate. President Trump signed the bill into law today, and reforms will go into effect for taxes filed in 2019. See Poligon’s statement on the bill's passage in Congress.

Government Shutdown Averted: The House and Senate passed a stopgap funding measure to avoid a government shutdown. The bill funds federal agencies through January 19 in the absence of a full budget, and includes funding for CHIP, disaster aid, and a controversial temporary extension of the Section 702 surveillance program.
 
02.pngKorematsu-Takai Civil Liberties Protection Act: Rep. Takano (D-CA-41) introduced H.R. 4680, which condemns the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II and expressly prohibits the detention of Americans based on categories like religion and national origin.
 
03.pngRAISE Family Caregivers Act: The House approved H.R. 3579, a bipartisan bill that would require the Department of Health and Human Services to develop a national strategy for actions by government, employers, and community organizations to assist people who provide care for their elderly and disabled family members. A similar bill passed the Senate in September.

Protect Patients Day of Action

Medical professionals and activists held a rally at the Capitol against provisions of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that would reduce access to healthcare, and afterward visited Congressional offices to share their stories of how the bill would negatively impact them.

House Democrats Press Conference

Poligon attended a press conference on the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act hosted by Minority Leader Pelosi (D-CA-12), featuring faith leaders and Americans who rely on programs that could experience funding reductions as a result of the bill.
