Hill Headlines

DACA Deadline Passes: On March 5th, the Trump administration’s proposed deadline for a legislative solution for Dreamers passed. Current DACA recipients can still renew their permits while lawsuits against President Trump’s termination of the DACA program proceed. The Supreme Court has yet to rule on whether the Trump administration can fully rescind the protections at a later date.

Legislative Updates

Restraining Orders for Gun Purchases: Sen. Rubio (R-FL) and Sen. Nelson (D-FL) announced a bill incentivizing states to allow law enforcement and family members to get a court order to prevent an individual from being able to purchase a gun if they believe they are at risk of dangerous actions.

Single Payer Health Care: Rep. Ellison (D-MN-5) assumed lead sponsorship of H.R. 676, the Expanded and Improved Medicare for All Act, which seeks to provide universal health coverage to all Americans.

Higher Rates for Payday Lending: After passing the House last month, H.R. 3299 is expected to be voted on by the Senate in the near future. The bill would make it easier for banks to sell their loans to payday lenders with higher interest rates than some states currently allow.

School Safety and Mental Health Services Improvement Act: Sen. Alexander (R-TN) introduced S. 2513, which would direct federal funding to support mental health resources and violence prevention efforts in schools.

Strengthening Pregnancy Discrimination Protections: Rep. Walberg (R-MI-07) and Rep. Noem (R-SD-At Large) introduced H.R. 5194, which would amend the Civil Rights Act to explicitly protect pregnant workers in cases of workplace discrimination.
