Even though Chestermere shares a border with the City of Calgary, residents can have a hard time getting into Calgary if they don’t have a vehicle or money for a taxi. But that is all about to change.

“In March, we were very pleased to hear an update about how our staff are working closely with the City of Calgary to finalize an agreement to extend the Max Purple line into Chestermere,” says Mayor Marshall Chalmers. “There are still details to be worked out, but adding transit as a service to our community is on the horizon for this fall.”

In February 2019, Administration was given the mandate to explore the feasibility of a functional, reliable, and cost-effective transit connection between Chestermere and Calgary. In the second half of 2020, staff provided Council with an opinion that the best option, from a technical perspective, is a peak period extension of the Max Purple Route.

On March 16, 2021, Chestermere Administration presented an update to City Council at their regular meeting outlining that the agreement is in development and included the draft of a potential route, a timeline, budget and 2nd reading of a transit bylaw. Staff anticipate bringing forward the final details to Council in the second quarter of 2021.

The City of Chestermere is mourning the loss of a community member who has passed away as a result of COVID-19. While the community has had over 800 confirmed cases and reports of hospitalizations, this is the first death.

In response, Mayor Chalmers has issued the following statement:

"It is with deep sadness that we announce the loss of a community member to COVID-19.

AHS has not disclosed the identity of this person, but our hearts, thoughts, and prayers go out to their family and friends who are mourning this loss. To you, we offer our sincere condolences.

As a community, we have battled hard against the disease, and many of our residents have made great sacrifices in their personal lives and business ventures to keep each other safe. For your efforts and commitment, we thank you.

But this news must serve as a poignant reminder that we must stay the course. In early March, we only had 16 active cases in our community. In the last few weeks, we have seen our local cases increase between 70-80 active cases.

We must continue to protect each other. We must continue to be diligent. We must continue to hold on a little longer to ensure that we do not lose any other residents to this terrible disease..."

Voter Identification Bylaw outlines three easy options for October election

The 2021 municipal election will be taking place on October 18 and City Council recently passed a bylaw that expands the identification options available to ensure that all voters can fully participate in the process.

“It is our goal to make sure that every vote counts in this upcoming election and that no eligible voter is turned away at a polling station,” says Returning Officer Noshy Karbani. “Formalizing and clearly communicating our voter identification requirements will help us to maintain a fair election and greatly reduce the possibility of voter fraud.”

Electors now have three options to provide proof of their identity as set out in the Bylaw:

Option 1: Provide one piece of government-issued photo identification (i.e.: a driver’s license)

Option 2: If no photo ID is available, an elector can provide two pieces of identification that contain their name, with at least one containing the elector’s current address

Option 3: Provide a letter of verification that confirms the elector’s legal name and current address. (See Schedule A at the link below for more details).
