For the Community  By the Community

August 2018 Newsletter. Issue 132

It takes over 100 years for a natural hollow to form to allow our endangered black cockatoos to breed, but only minutes to donate towards artificial nesting boxes.

Busy, busy!
Landcare SJ is supported by the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale in the day to day activities of the centre.

In order to fund projects, Landcare SJ must apply for available funding opportunities.

Open now are the 2018 Community Stewardship Grants from the State NRM Program.

Landcare SJ officers are busy preparing grant applications for long-term, on-ground programs in the Serpentine Jarrahdale Shire totalling than $900,000.

These on-ground projects represent activities including revegetation, soil improvement, indigenous involvement, improving connectivity for native animals, and supporting water catchment health.

Learn about these new project opportunities and current projects at the Landcare SJ upcoming AGM in September.

SJ Food and Farm Alliance

Dr Christine Jones is an internationally recognised and highly respected soil ecologist and founder of Carbon for Life.

She has a wealth of experience working with innovative landholders to implement regenerative land management techniques that enhance biodiversity, increase biological activity, sequester carbon, activate soil nutrient cycles, restore water balance, improve productivity and create new topsoil.

This symposium will explore regenerative agriculture and help landholders understand how these ideas can be implemented in a local context.

This event includes morning and afternoon teas, plus lunch, PLUS a
20 litre bag of Humicarb from CWise to take home to improve your garden soil health!

Children from Byford Childcare Centre, local Homeschoolers, Eton Farm Education, and some local primary school students planted with so much enthusiasm we were finished in no time.

National Tree Day

The 2018 Landcare SJ National Tree Day Celebration was held at a drainage basin on Arnold RD, Serpentine on the 29th July.

The clouds threatened, but the day was cool and clear for planters who turned up at 9 am to support the annual event and the children’s workshops from Waste Is My Resource was a great hit once all the planting was done.

National Tree Day was a great opportunity to change an underutilised basin into a natural site for residents and community members to enjoy.
