April 2018 Newsletter. Issue 128

It takes over 100 years for a natural hollow to form to allow our endangered black cockatoos to breed, but only minutes to donate towards artificial nesting boxes.

Volunteering with Landcare SJ.
We have had a few enquiries lately about volunteering opportunities at Landcare SJ.

During our annual Planting Calander, Landcare SJ has multiple sites that require us to dig holes, plant seedlings, and set up corflute guards.

We are always happy to have volunteers and can work with you to see what sites are best.

There might be one of our planting sites right around the corner.

Please contact us if you are interested in becoming involved and volunteering with us at Landcare SJ.

Water Hyacinth Citizen Science

Helicopter perfect tool for spotting water hyacinth.
Aerial images were taken over the Easter long weekend of nearly 40km of the Serpentine River & Birega Drain. The area from the Forrest Highway to North of Mundijong Rd encapsulates the extent of the water hyacinth infestation, which has also been photographed from the air in 2016 and 2017.

The recent repeat of the surveillance process has been funded by the Government of Western Australia, through the State NRM Program.

Images have loaded and are ready to be checked from the comfort of your own home, using the citizen science program set up by the Aquila Project.

Check out the website for how to check images.

Free Verge Plant Program

Have you used our new online form to apply for the FREE Verge Plants  (FVP)  Program?

There are new changes to the FVP  Program in 2018.

To help promote these changes Landcare SJ, in partnership with the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale and Switch your Thinking, is hosting a Native Garden Expo, details above.

Come along to the event and learn how to create a water-wise, native, bird attracting garden using free native seedlings supplied by the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale.
