Making tourism more sustainable: sharing methodologies for a joint action

MED Sustainable Tourism Community - 2nd community building event
Athens, Greece, 4-5 October 2017

As the MED Sustainable Tourism Community is moving forward we need to strengthen our ties, to harmonise our activities, to develop and test common strategies and joining forces to have a greater impact. At this end Panteion University is organising the 2nd community building event dedicated to the Interreg MED-funded transregional modular projects working on sustainable tourism “Making tourism more sustainable: sharing methodologies for a joint action” in Athens, Greece, 4-5 October 2017.

Representatives from our community if 14 modular projects will have the opportunity to exchange their approaches and methods towards sustainable tourism in the Mediterranean and work together in thematic groups to better achieve this goal.

Sustainable tourism: strategic axis to enhance Mediterranean governance

“Panoramed: enhancing Mediterranean governance” is the first project launced by Interreg MED that gathers regional and national Governments of the program countries for the next 5 years and it is endowed with 9 million euro funding. “The aim of Panoramed is to collect scientific evidences from all the Interreg MED-funded projects and from other institutions working for Mediterranean development to design more informed policies and strategic joint planning” declared Patrizia Busolini, Project Officer of Interreg MED Joint Secretariat, in an interview with BleuTourMed_C3. “The Programme member States have decided to initially focus on coastal and maritime tourism and maritime surveillance of the Mediterranean area – continued Ms. Busolini-. However other strategic themes will be addressed in the near future”.

To support its action, Panoramed will take advantage of the results attained and the knowledge produced by all the Interreg MED-funded projects that are currently working on three main axes: innovation, low carbon emission economy and environment. BleuTourMed_C3 will represent the MED Sustainable Tourism Community at the Panoramed’s launching event the 27th September 2017 in Sevilla, Spain. This will be the occasion to shed some lights on the potential of sustainable tourism as a strategic driver for economic development that strengthens the resilience of Mediterranean ecosystems

During its “kick off event” – 27th September 2017 in Seville, Spain – Panoramed will present its strategic approach and the main challenges it is taking on. Two representatives from each Interreg MED’s horizontal projects – the special initiatives whose aim is to animate thematic communities of projects and to capitalise on their results – will attend this event. On 28th September 2017, they will also join a closed doors coordination meeting with the Interreg MED Joint Secretariat, to develop a common methodology to share knowledge and results in order to contribute, via Panoramed, to a better governance of the Mediterranean.

Exploiting the full potential of tourism requires an innovative approach and sustainable basis. Therefore, effective strategies and targeted integrated actions should be developed and implemented across the Mediterranean region. With this common objective, 14 Modular Projects (MPs) are implemented under the Interreg Med Sustainable Tourism Community. Their aim is to study, test and capitalise innovative instruments and actions towards the enhancement of tourism sustainability in the Mediterranean.

The MED Sustainable Tourism Community is featured by BleuTourMed_C3 Project, a three-year Horizontal Project financed by the ERDF within the Interreg MED Programme whose aim is to facilitate the knowledge sharing and the capitalisation of results of the 14 Modular Projects presented in this document.
