I hope everyone is having a wonderful fall season! I am really excited to have our leaders in Community Projects (Diaper Bank Chair Amanda Herzberger and DIAD Chair Jill Everett) doing a training on best practices in volunteering, our current community projects, and how to repackage diapers/pull diaper orders. Last month, Cathy Foutz traveled to the National Diaper Bank Network conference- read more about her experience below.

Next week will be our last official GMM of the year as we will be hosting our annual holiday party on Sunday, December 8th; make sure to mark your calendars! See you all next Tuesday!
Best,

ANNUAL FUND CAMPAIGN
This month our annual fund appeal letters will go out to members, past donors, friends of the Diaper Bank, and prospective donors. If you have not yet donated during the current fiscal year (July 1, 2019 to June 30, 2020), please consider making a gift now! Last year, 40% of members donated to the Junior League’s Annual Fund. That is a very strong showing, but our dream is for 100% participation. Last year, the median donation to the Annual Fund was $58. From $5 to $1,000, your donations were crucial in both keeping the lights on at the Diaper Bank and showing prospective grant funders how committed our members are to our League!

Here’s a reminder of our annual giving levels:
  • Mary Harriman Circle (donations of $500 and above)
  • 1985 Club ($250-$499)
  • Red and White Society ($51-$249)
  • Friend (Up to $50)
  • Annual Giving Circle (includes any donor who donates 3+ years consecutively)

If you would like an annual appeal letter to be sent to a friend, business, family member, or other person you believe might like to make a gift to the Junior League, please let me know.

FINANCE & FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE
Grant Writing Assistance

The Finance and Fundraising Committee is looking for members with grant writing experience (or a desire to learn) to pursue some local opportunities.  The League has been very fortunate in the last year to secure substantial funding through grants and corporate sponsorship, and would like to continue to grow this aspect of our fundraising strategy.

DIAPERS IN AMERICA CONFERENCE
Five Take-Aways from Diapers in America Conference

I was honored to be a guest of the National Diaper Bank Network at their annual conference in Cincinnati earlier this month – see Facebook for photos!  But here are the five top things that I learned at the conference:
  • The National Diaper Bank Network (NDBN,) of which we are a member, began in Connecticut in 2011 by visionary Joanne Samuel Goldblum (whose son is a senior at UVM). Since then, in partnership with Huggies, over 220 million diapers have been distributed by network members – with 68 million in 2018 alone!
  • We are doing great! While most attendees were from larger cities and served a wider range of clientele, our goal to continue to distribute over 100,000 diapers to our community partner food shelves next year is spot on!
  • Virtually every group with whom I spoke is funded SOLELY by donations. Some have as many as six or more paid full-time employees. Fundraising and outreach are key components to their continued success.
  • While I met several Junior League members – whose projects are similar to ours – many other folks asked how they could access Junior Leagues in their areas to ask for support.  I was happy to fill them in!
  • It was delightful to tour “Sweet Cheeks,” the Cincinnati Diaper Bank.  Only four years old, it was started by one young mother’s intense passion (reminding me much of our Amanda Herzberger) in her basement and in friends’ garages.  They are now home to a re-purposed warehouse space, and their shelves of packaged diapers, labels, and pallets of Huggies look just like ours!  They are helped by the Junior League of Cincinnati.
  • Oh No - #6!: Very few organizations talked about visions of advocacy with their state governments, with hopes of securing diaper stipends for low-income families or other family-support measures.

DIAPER BANK UPDATE
All is well in diaper land and as you'll see when you come for the next GMM the bank is bursting (a good problem to have!). We've received more than twenty five pallets from our large NDBN donation and it's STILL not all of them. In addition, Nancy Warner is generously holding nine pallets worth of size twos for us from Seventh Generation at her warehouse in Stowe.

We're adding a few additional partners for our November distribution (Franklin Grand Isle Community Action and the Essex, Jericho, Underhill Ecumenical Ministry (EJU)). South Burlington's food shelf opened on November 1st and after they have secured non-profit status we hope to add them as a partner too. We're aiming to distribute 115,000 diapers this year which is just shy of 20,000 diapers every other month. This week we have two groups from Seventh Generation coming in to help us inventory, repackage, and put away diapers and we hope to continue to have an outside group or two a month coming in just to help shoulder the load. If you have a group of friends, co-workers, or family that would be interested in doing a repackaging please email Amanda.

Also the donation did not include pull-ups so our Amazon wishlist is now exclusively pull-ups -- feel free to share it!

Please read on for upcoming repackaging events and sign up.

Thanks for your continued help!
