Greetings and congratulations on making it through what may have been the most unexpected slew of events in a Junior League year in the history of the League! We did it though and did so with grace, style and a true sense of community. So, thank you all for your hard work, your flexibility and your spirit to serve and help one another and our community along the way. That being said, we just celebrated our 1 millionth diaper distribution and did so in true Junior League style at that. What a success and monumental landmark in our quest to help make an impact on affordable living and diaper need in this state. Way to go, ladies! We are also thrilled to be kicking off the start of a new Junior League year. So, be on the lookout for communication from outgoing officers and current committee chairs in the next few weeks to know next steps of how to get plugged in and involved as we (thankfully) turn the page on the calendar. I hope that you all have a wonderful kick off to summer full of sunshine, fun and time spent doing what makes your soul happy.  I look forward to seeing y’all soon!

Yours in Volunteering,

Mary-Katherine

DIAPER BANK UPDATE: 1 MILLIONTH DIAPER

We held a wonderful recognition of our distribution of the ONE MILLIONTH diaper on June 1. A terrific team pulled it together, with a large “Check” for a fun photo-op, new signage, decorations, fresh literature, and cookies adorned with diaper pins. At the risk of missing folks, we do thank the Diaper Bank Committee, our communications team, Charity Clark, and Katie Muttitt who readied the event. Dignitaries included Congressman Peter Welch, state legislators, Jason Fitzgerald of Dee Physical Therapy, and representatives of the Vermont Foodbank, Feeding Chittenden, and several other community recipients. And none of this million-diaper milestone would be possible without the full-time-job dedication of Amanda Herzberger!

As well as members working on repackaging and reorganizing the Bank itself in recent weeks, a crew worked in the University Mall space last week to reduce the pallet sizes of diapers stored there so they could be moved to a new space by mid-summer. Drives by our newest members have been terrific. Sommers Chiropractic came through with another 6,000 diapers in their recent drive too.

A summer calendar of projects will be issued soon, so keep an eye out for repackaging and distribution opportunities. If anyone or group would like to run a drive, please get in touch with Amanda or Jessica. We are especially in need of Newborn diapers at this time.

Thanks everyone,

Cathy Foutz

FEATURED MEMBER: KATE HAMPTON

Why did you join the JLCV?
I joined Junior League to meet like-minded women who want to give back to their community through service and philanthropy. And hopefully make a lot of friends while doing it :)

What's your favorite part of being in the league?
My favorite part of being in the League is getting to know the other members and creating lasting relationships.

What are some other activities you do outside the League?
I enjoy anything physical - yoga, hiking, dancing, working out, walking my dog... In addition to Junior League, I’m also on the board of my local Rotary Club in St. Albans. I serve on the leadership team of the Florida Public Relations Association and on the Alumni Advisory Committee of Pi Beta Phi at UVM. I've started volunteering with the Vermont Community Garden Network and I’m currently enrolled in a 3 year program at the Vermont Center for Integrative Herbalism to become a Clinical Herbalist. I LOVE music, so I can’t wait until concerts become a thing again!

What brought you to Vermont?
Despite having grown up in Florida, I was born in Vermont. I’ve had the opportunity to visit throughout my life and have always loved the state. The decision to move back in 2019 was essentially to prove anyone wrong who said, “you can never go home again.”

What’s your go-to restaurant (dine-in or take out)?
I can’t name just one...E.B. Strong’s, Kitchen Table, Miami Mami, A Single Pebble and Kathmandu are high on the list.

What are you passionate about?
I am passionate about living on purpose, giving back when you can, and women supporting other women.

THIS YEAR'S AWARD WINNERS
Jessica Rossi - Rising Star Award
Beginning with the New Member Retreat back in the fall of 2019 we could all tell Jessica was a born leader and going to be a dynamic part of the League. She was instrumental in organizing her new member class and leading their New Member Challenge to fundraise and collect diaper donations for the Diaper Bank. Then in the 2020-2021 League year Jessica placed as Co-Chair of the Diaper Bank Committee working closely with Amanda Herzberger on what turned out to be a banner year for the Bank. In Amanda’s words, “Jessica has been a wonderful and integral addition to the diaper bank team always ready to step up and take on tasks when asked. Her work on grants has helped us secure additional funding that allows us to continue our work.” She will definitely be one to watch moving forward and could easily be League President someday.
Katie Bazzano - Outstanding Member Award
Anyone who has spent more than 5 minutes with Katie will know this girl is F-U-N!! Along with Caitlin Dorka, Katie took an active role in organizing our socials to recruit new members in August of last year, a task that turned out to be trickier than most years due to the pandemic. Then in the fall, she accepted the challenge of filling the Social Chair position in a year that most definitely not ideal for being social. But Katie figured it out with her innovative Zoom socials, including Harry Potter trivia night, Jackbox game night, and even a Nailed It! baking competition. When restrictions let up after the new year, we headed outside together for cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and a hike up Mt Philo. Finally, she managed one indoor face-to-face social in April at Waterworks. If this is what she pulls off during a pandemic, it will no doubt be F-U-N  to see what socials look like under her leadership as Membership VP next year!
