The Township of Muskoka Lakes has held two Special Planning Committee meetings so far to consider the first draft of the revised Official Plan. The first meeting was held on Monday, March 29, and after a general introduction, the Meridian consultants started going through each part of the draft OP, inviting feedback from members of the Planning Committee. All meetings are available on the TML YouTube channel where you can watch live or view the recorded meeting video at a later date.
The second meeting was held on April 1, and the highlight with respect to our campaign to block the Lippa quarry application, was a presentation made by Linda Haslam-Stroud on behalf of the Skeleton Lake Cottagers Organization. In the meeting video, watch from 13:00 - 19:00 and you can see that she is focusing on the dilution of existing policies to protect Waterfront Areas from the threats posed by Aggregate Extraction Operations. Linda's comments were strongly endorsed by Councillor Gordon Roberts, and the Planning Committee voted overwhelmingly to retain the existing policies, as opposed to those in the draft OP.
This is definitely a step in the right direction, but we must be vigilant, to make sure that the next draft of the OP includes policies to protect Waterfront Areas from the threats posed by Aggregate Extraction Operations. These policies should be, at the very least, as strong as the policies in the current OP. We will continue to monitor the ongoing OP review process, and will let you know if your advocacy is needed.
The next Special Planning Committee meeting to review the draft OP will be held on Tuesday, April 6, starting at 1:00 pm. Full details here: AGENDA - SPECIAL PLANNING COMMITTEE MEETING: APRIL 6, 2021
