"We've taken fresh water for granted" Eugenie Sage told Crux at a $7.5 million funding announcement in Wanaka this morning.

The Minister for Land Information made it clear that there was more funding on the way and she also acknowledged the link between tourism and the Southern Lakes being able to deliver against the expectation that our lakes will be clean and unpolluted.

News is brought to you by Crux and Queenstown News

Following Crux enquiries about live streaming council meetings the QLDC has decided to start live streaming meetings from October this year.

However Mayor Jim Boult, as Chair of full council meetings, has said that he will consider a Crux request to live stream earlier meetings on a case by case basis.

He says he is in favour of QLDC meetings being shared online but wants to see it done properly by either a council team, or an external video production team, so that the coverage can be shared equally with all media.

The council comms team who will manage the project have told Crux that technical planning is still in progress but that it is likely that there will be at least one camera that will cover all councillors as well as people making submissions along with good quality audio.

A Crux poll on whether council meetings should be live streamed is still in progress with 236 people voting for video streaming and 26 opting to stay with existing levels of council coverage

Even brain surgeons and people with a PHD have questions about our new Three Bin waste and recycling system. Some of us are trying to make it up as we go along, some have done all the research but still have questions and some of us don't have a clue. Fortunately Gina Dempster from the wonderful Wanaka Wastebusters has all the answers - for dummies and experts alike. Tip Number #1 - children can't be recycled!

Did you put your new recycling wheelie bin out this week? And did you know what to put in it? 1st July was the start date for our new collections, and most streets had the correct recycling bins out – so that’s a win for our district! If you’re still a little confused, don’t worry. Shifting habits takes a little bit of thought at the start, but it’s pretty easy once you get the hang of it.

Just in case you don’t have one of those really handy husbands/wives or neighbours who always read the instructions and tells you what to do, here’s a rundown on how to use the new bins.

Nearly everyone will have two new recycling bins (yellow and blue) and one new rubbish bin (red). Apologies to anyone who was missed during the initial bin deliveries - if you haven’t already talked to QLDC customer services, give them a call on 03 441 0499 (Queenstown) or 03 443 0024 (Wanaka). Waste Management will deliver your bins in the week, once you’ve been added to the list.

We've been aware for some time of the formidable power held by the world's social media giants like Facebook and Google. Last night the University of Otago held a high powered symposium in Queenstown to examine just how much power they have and what the effects on New Zealand will be. Cath Gilmour, a former QLDC councillor and co-chair of the Catalyst Trust, has written this report on the key points from the OU symposium.

Foreign interest groups could actively foment outrage with fake debates about “wedge issues” like abortion and marijuana to divide New Zealand society prior to next year’s elections.

New Zealanders should “proactively anticipate” such manipulation of our democratic process, Brainbox Institute director Tom Barraclough told the audience at last night’s University of Otago Winter Symposium in Queenstown.

‘Bitten by the FAANG’ looked at the impacts of these global technological giants - especially Facebook and Google - on democracy and what might be done to control them. FAANG is an acronym for Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix and Google.

Marianne Elliott, co-founder of digital lobbying group ActionStation and co-director of The Workshop, recently produced a report on the effects of digital technology on democracy after a year’s research funded by the Law Foundation.

She said a trend in the lead up to the US 2016 election was the creation of entire fake online communities by both Republicans and Democrats “to have them do and say ridiculous things, to sow discord between the different camps”.

The Otago Regional Council has launched a new water monitoring system at Lake Hayes. Here's their media release.

"The first of its kind in Otago, the buoy was installed today by Otago Regional Council (ORC) and University of Waikato staff and will help to track changes in water quality in Lake Hayes. Two more buoys are also planned for Otago lakes, in Lakes Wanaka and Wakatipu.

The installation of the buoy is part of a wider work programme in Lake Hayes, including a turbidity study at Mill Creek, a catchment study, and upcoming consultation on options for remediating water quality in the lake.

ORC commissioned the University of Waikato to build and install the high-frequency monitoring buoy in Lake Hayes.

“The data from this buoy will greatly improve our understanding of how Lake Hayes is responding to the environment in both the short and long-term, so we can make informed decisions about remediation,” said ORC Environmental Resource Scientist, Rachel Ozanne.

The buoy is an autonomous water quality monitoring system. It has two parts: a weather station mounted above the water, and a water quality sensor package, which uses an electric winch and armoured data cable to raise and lower the sensors throughout the water column.

The top mounted weather station measures data related to climate and weather, including wind speed and direction, air temperature, solar radiation, relative humidity, barometric pressure and rainfall.

The winch-operated sensors move up and down the water column collating data related to water quality, including water temperature, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll fluorescence, phycocyanin fluorescence, turbidity, pH and conductivity.

“The advantage of this system is that water can be measured at multiple depths up to every 0.1 metre, allowing an understanding of important water column variables such as the vertical distribution of algae,” said Mrs Ozanne.

Mike Hanff, Chairman of the Friends of Lake Hayes Society, said the buoy’s installation was a good development for the community.

“This is a major positive step on the journey ORC is taking with the Friends of Lake Hayes to provide data to assist in measuring remediation of the catchment and the health of our beautiful lake.

“It’s particularly exciting for Friends of Lake Hayes as a piece of technology we’ve long been hoping for.”
