I have observed the current debate around Lime Scooters with interest. A “Lime” maybe the focus of
attention but at the heart of the issue is electric scooters and their wide adoption internationally.
While Lime may be the first mass scooter sharing business to appear in New Zealand, I’m sure
there’ll be others and there will be a high take up by people owning their own scooters.

It’s got me to thinking about our trail network and the use thereof for commuting. For some time,
there has been a growing number of individuals, (including at least two Councillors that I know of),
who commute using electric bikes. Good on them. They are a rapidly evolving piece of kit which gets
better and better, and is quickly becoming mainstream as an eco-friendly yet practical way of
commuting around the district. Add in that there’s an element of exercise involved with long-term
financial savings to be made and it’s a very compelling option.

I think it’s highly likely the Lime will come to Queenstown and I’m sure scooters will become as common here as they are in other parts of the country. As things sit though, they won’t be sharing our trails with electric bike users simply for the fact that our unsealed trails are unsuitable for scooter use. I’m pretty sure you’d be over the handle bars in two minutes if you tried to go too far down the Frankton Track for example.

As such, I’m thinking that it’s time we got serious about sealing some of our more popular tracks to make them more usable. If we did so, we’d need to address issues like grade separation to ensure that pedestrians (for example mums with prams) are separated from those on bikes and scooters.

So it’s not an easy task. However, if you live at Frankton or beyond, an electric bike or scooter ride down a well sealed track might be a practical and healthy way to get to work.

If this is to come to pass, it will require the input of NZTA. NZTA’s responsibilities do not stop at roads. Active transport, as any method of transport other than travelling in a motor vehicle or motorbike, is a recognised form of transport supported by the transport agency. NZTA is supportive of active transport and the issue of sealing the tracks has been broached with them. I think the time has come where we need to push harder on this as another viable method of arresting congestion on our roads.

We’ve had an enormous amount of success with our local $2 bus in and around Wakatipu and it just goes to show what can be achieved with good solutions. I think sealed commuter tracks are perhaps one of the next steps which will make a big difference.

If there’s one benefit from sitting in the Ladies Mile congestion, it’s some time to think about what we need to do to alleviate the problem.

If we don’t, I’ll soon find that biking from Lake Hayes to town is faster than driving the car.

An Otago University lecturer has won a significant global adventure tourism conference for Queenstown.

Here's the full media release from The Queenstown Convention Bureau. We ll done to Dr Susan Houge Mackenzie.

Queenstown, New Zealand has won a bid to host the 2020 International Adventure Conference, which will bring leading tourism researchers to the Southern Hemisphere for the first time, in December next year.

The winning bid was presented by Dr Susan Houge Mackenzie on behalf of her team from the University of Otago, Queenstown Resort College, and the Otago Polytechnic Institute of Sport and Adventure. Dr Houge Mackenzie is a lecturer in the Department of Tourism at the University of Otago and a member of the World Tourism Forum.

“Queenstown’s global reputation as an adventure tourism hub made it a stand-out choice for the Adventure Tourism Research Association (ATRA),” she says.

“Thanks to the support of Tourism New Zealand’s Conference Assistance Programme, we have been able to bring a landmark event for tourism research to New Zealand. International researchers are excited to be meeting here to exchange ideas and perspectives on adventure tourism,” she says.

“Queenstown is an ideal place for adventure tourism researchers, operators and policy makers to engage. The conference will focus on bringing academics and practitioners together to share their challenges and innovations, foster connections, and identify synergies. Our aim is to ensure symbiotic benefits for the local community and international delegates. We hope local practitioners and policy makers will benefit from international perspectives and expertise, and our international delegates in turn want to learn about Queenstown’s unique approaches to adventure tourism.”

Dr Houge Mackenzie says the conference will have a strong emphasis on sustainable development goals and how adventure tourism can help support and work to meet these at both an international and local level.

Co-founder of ATRA, Professor Peter Varley based in Sogndal, Norway says he is delighted to be collaborating with the conference hosts in New Zealand. “It’s a tremendous opportunity for the adventure tourism community to have this conference in the Southern Hemisphere for the first time.  Queenstown has a rightful claim to be the premier adventure tourism destination globally.  It is a very fitting setting for our conference, which routinely attracts a diverse international audience to discover and debate the burning issues which shape the industry,” he says.

Delegates, mostly from Europe, the United Kingdom, Scandinavia and North America, are set to arrive from December 7, 2020. Queenstown Resort College welcomes being the local host venue for the academic sessions, as it aligns with and supports QRC's growing research agenda. The event will be supported by students and staff from the Institute of Sport and Adventure, based in Cromwell, and local tourism operators.

Securing the 9th annual International Adventure Conference for Queenstown was the result of a successful collaboration with Queenstown Convention Bureau and Tourism New Zealand Business Events, who helped produce the bid.

“Thanks to the generous support of Tourism New Zealand’s Conference Assistance Programme, we have been able to attract an international tourism research event to New Zealand. International researchers are excited to meet in this globally-recognised adventure tourism destination and Tourism New Zealand have provided excellent support throughout this process,” Dr Houge Mackenzie says.

Queenstown Convention Bureau Business Development Director, Kiran Nambiar says the impact of this event will go beyond the economic value of hosting high-value visitors to the region. “It also fosters and grows the expertise and knowledge within our community and allows us to share insights with our international peers.

“Being selected to host such a significant event in Queenstown, the home of adventure tourism, is a great win for the region and its business events industry. The unique combination of innovative adventure and nature-based activities in Queenstown paralleled with the impressive landscapes is sure to make this an inspirational event for international delegates,” he says.

WCG’s success, in saving native bush and tussockland, is a result of controlling or eliminating the rapid spread of NZ’s number one pest plant: wilding conifers.

Notice Cecil Peak, see tussockland free of wilding pines, coverage would now be a reality if not for a concerted effort from landowners and WCG.

Visit historic Skippers Canyon, observe control measures carried out for future generations.

Walk up Ben Lomond, see weeded “Adopt a Plot” acreages, tussock & alpine plants border beech forests, which are hundreds of years old.

Look up at Queenstown Hill-top, the town face, volunteers have fought to preserve the last remnants of natives and views.

Drive past Roaring Meg where multiple landowners came together to stop the spread towards Wakatipu.

View Remarkables, over 100,000 pines have been removed.

Look around our hills and mountains, our coveted landscapes and recreational areas being restored and native biodiversity protected from further invasion.

We are acting now to stop the further loss of our native flora & fauna.  The initial push has been made to bring maintenance back to manageable levels rather than the alternative; with no control, estimates show that in 20 years, 20% of NZ and in 40 years, 40% of NZ could be a wilding conifer monoculture.

WCG is steadily rolling back the spread from our backcountry toward Queenstown.  It’s possible to achieve continued success by exploiting pines known weaknesses with technology and controlled programmes.

WCG is a not-for-profit organisation, the volunteer executive work closely to the National Wilding Conifer Strategy using best practices and collective knowledge from DOC, MPI, QLDC, ORC, LINZ, Landcare, WRT & Scientists.
