Collaboration Over Competition
Recently I spoke at a networking group made up of women photographers in the Vancouver, Washington area called Viewpoint Collaborative. What really impressed me was how this group worked together to help each other with their businesses. Collaboration over competition is a key part of their group’s philosophy. Whether helping one another at a photo shoot or offering studio space when it rains, they communicate openly and offer support when needed.
Often in networking people in the same profession are wary of “the competition”. Some networking groups only let in one per professional category as they don’t want there to be competition.
What I have found over the years is that by allowing more than one person per profession in a group leads to more collaboration. Photographers are a great example of this. In the group I visited, some of the members focused on weddings, some on newborn and maternity photography while others focused on headshots and portraits. Everyone had a different niche which is what makes for a successful business.
Who do you collaborate with? Have you met others in your profession and invited them to coffee to connect?
How do you help other entrepreneurs? I love to connect people who are in like minded professions so that they can collaborate. I’ve seen great friendships develop as well as business opportunities.
