Dress Code

Dance 4 Joy Ministries enforces a strict dress code to promote modesty, a Christ-centered environment, discipline, and uniformity in its’ classes. Appropriate dress allows instructors to view proper body alignment and muscle use. Our ministry extends beyond the studio therefore covering our bodies between the car and classes is required. Dancers who do not follow the dress code will be given a verbal warning and if further incidents occur, the dancer will be asked to observe the class.

“Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle, you will still be standing firm. Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”

– Ephesians 6:13-18

Did you know?
  • Underwear should not be worn under dance tights.
  • Dance shoes should only be worn inside the dance studio.
  1. I have a Ballet class and then a Jazz (or tap, etc) class immediately after. What should I do?  Simply put on some dance shorts and your jazz shoes. Your teachers request that you NOT change out of your tights, bun, etc. because it takes up so much time between classes.
  2. I have a Tap (or jazz, etc) class then a Ballet class immediately after. What should I do?  Please come dressed in your leotard and tights with an additional layer of dance clothes over. Please have your hair in a bun prior to your first class. You should not need to use the changing facilities between classes.
D4J Policies for Dancer Placement in Classes
#1 – In each season, dancers are sent class recommendations by the Executive and Artistic Director.

#2 – Families can choose for their dancer to take ANY genre of dance for the level their dancer is at. All dancers are invited to be ASSESSED for level by the directors/teacher at any time to make sure proper placement is achieved.

#2 – We encourage families to talk with the directors about the goals for their dancer, and thus the directors will do everything possible to make a schedule that leads dancers towards their goals and as ministers of the WORD. The primary FOCUS of Dance 4 Joy Ministries is to train up the next generation to proclaim the Gospel in dance. All skills are given by God for His Glory and for the service of all. All skills are valued EQUALLY and we all serve One God as the Body of Christ, always encouraging and lifting each other up. No skill is higher than another and all are expected to serve with humility, confidence, excellence and JOY at all levels.

#3 – If a family cannot attend the recommended classes, a new plan will be made to the best of the director’s ability in the current class offerings and can include private lessons to bridge gaps.

#4 – Repetition is the mother of all learning. Thus, dancers will GROW in levels as they STAY in that level and mature. The directors will let all dancers know when they are ready to move UP in level. Repeating levels and mastering work is very appropriate for all dancers, and all dancers will benefit from classes at their level, below their level for mastery, and possibly above their level for exposure and additional challenge.

#5 – If a dancer requests to take a class OUT of their age range or ABOVE their current performance level, the directors MAY allow that class to be taken by the dancer if space is available and the dancer can attend at the maturity level needed. In MOST cases, the dancer would not be allowed to perform with that class, but instead take the class for additional CHALLENGE and exposure. The directors will gladly give feedback to help all dancers improve, and the directors have final decision on who is ready to proclaim with Gospel with excellence at all levels. Dancers will not be allowed to ONLY take classes outside their age range or ABOVE their current performance level. This is not good training and does not develop the dancer properly.

#6 – No dancer is ever left out of performance and outreach opportunities at the level they can proclaim the Gospel with excellence. We honor all levels and give all dancers the opportunity to minister.

#7 – The directors are happy to define “excellence” for any/all levels so dancers/families can understand clearly what is necessary for dancers to perform at each level.
D4J Concerns Policy
As is normal in any body of people, concerns will arise from time to time and should be addressed with grace, peace, justice, and mercy quickly and effectively. Thus, peace can be restored and our service to Our Lord can continue effectively for the work He has given us to do.

Ephesians 4:15-16 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.

The leadership of Dance 4 Joy Ministries, including Christy Hernandez, Director, and the entire Board of Directors, teachers and staff, would ask that you follow the protocol below in expressing concerns regarding dance classes (behavior, structure, learning environment, etiquette, class level) or ministry (biblical teaching, discipleship, outreach etiquette).

#1 – At the very first sign of concern, go through these steps privately. For simple concerns, not all steps may be needed, but for more complex concerns, the entire process must be adhered to:

a. Glorify God: Ask, “How can I please and honor God in this situation?”
b. Get the log out of your own eye: “How can I show Jesus’ work in me by taking responsibility for my contribution to this concern?”
c. Gently restore: “How can I lovingly serve others by helping them take responsibility for their
contribution to this conflict?”
d. Go and be reconciled: “How can I demonstrate the forgiveness of God and encourage a reasonable solution to this conflict?” (Taken from The Peace Maker by Ken Sande)

#2 – Pray Philippians 4:6-7 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

#3 – Express your concerns directly to Christy Hernandez, director, in a 15min appointed phone meeting OR in-person meeting. Contact Christy @ or text 714-287-6886 to make an appointment.

#4 - It is the policy of D4J that concerns should NOT be expressed to others, but should go directly to the director, Christy Hernandez as outlined in #3.

#5 - It is the policy of D4J that concerns should NOT be written in texts or emails. To cultivate an environment for good communication, please verbalize in a phone or face to face appointment after #1 and #2 have been completed.

#6 – It is the policy of D4J that concerns be transparent. D4J will not conduct any conversation on hearsay or without knowing all people involved by name.
