Alpha Sigma Lambda is a premier honor society which partners with colleges and universities to celebrate the scholarship and leadership of adult students in higher education. ASL is devoted to the advancement of scholarship and recognition of nontraditional students continuing their education.

SUNY Cortland

The Lambda Omicron chapter of the State University of New York College at Cortland inducted thirty-four new adult students to membership at the 18th annual Alpha Sigma Lambda ceremony and dinner on April 12, 2017.  According to Cheryl Hines, the National Councilor for the chapter and the Alpha Sigma Lambda Board of Directors’ Vice President, the new inductees brought the chapter up to 589 members.

To be eligible for the 2017 induction, the top twenty percent of SUNY Cortland's adult students had to have a minimum GPA of 3.58.  Dr. Erik J. Bitterbaum, President of SUNY Cortland, welcomed our new inductees.  Hines indicates that Regina Grantham, Associate Professor and Department Chair of the Communication Disorders and Sciences Department, was the faculty guest speaker.  Ms. Grantham offered her words of wisdom and respect for our adult students as well as her own personal experiences as a student and as a person who is passionate about her career in the speech-hearing-language field. Corrine Edick, a member who was inducted in 2016, presented the ASL ritual and helped to hand out the pins.  The new members shared some of their experiences leading up to their education at SUNY Cortland as well as their future plans after graduation.

David Duryea, Vice President of Finance and Management, who is also a retired U.S. Navy Rear Admiral, presented Jason Blayda with an Alpha Sigma Lambda military medallion, for his military service and sacrifice with the Navy.

A cake, provided by the Non-Traditional Student Organization, followed the ceremony.

This year, we also wanted to recognize the friends and family members who have supported our inductees and helped to make their academic successes possible.  Prior to the ceremony, we invited each student to identify a guest who would present them with their ASL stole and to share a few thoughts on what that person’s support has meant to them.  At the ceremony, as friends and family members presented the stole to the inductees, we read out loud the students’ statements of thanks and gratitude.   Lots of tears and hugs ensued!
