29th June / 8pm / Upstairs @ The York / £7 - Sloth Racket / ROOKS
In June, we are very excited to present UK saxophonist Cath Roberts’ quintet Sloth Racket, alongside Norfolk-based no-input mixer and percussion duo ROOKS.
Sloth Racket is a project that mixes graphic notation, deep grooves and free improvisation, led by Cath Roberts. The band includes guitarist Anton Hunter (who performed at Plink Plonk in 2016), alongside tenor saxophonist Sam Andreae, double bassist Seth Bennett, and drummer Johnny Hunter.
The group is held together by Cath’s formidable baritone sax playing, and this gig is part of a UK tour to launch the second Sloth Racket, which, like their debut album ‘Triptych’, will be released on the Luminous Label, linked to the LUME night that Cath co-leads in London.
Playing opposite Sloth Racket on this night are ROOKS. This is a ‘temporary collaboration’ between percussionist Tazelarr Stevenson and no-input mixer player Oliver Payne. The project was devised after the duo witnessed the roosting of 50,000 rooks at Old Buckingham in 2016.
Astounded by the heavily textured and ever changing cacophony the birds produced they were inspired to interpret this natural phenomenon using scatter gun percussion and the flurried and unpredictable sounds of electronic feedback.
