Welcome to the Spring 2017 Plink Plonk Newsletter…

We're hoping to send you a newsletter at the beginning of each month (or thereabouts), detailing our activities for the next month, and including pictures and recordings from previous gigs. If you'd like to opt out of these emails then please just reply to this email.

We are really excited about the next few months with some huge guests and the launch of a new platfomr for local improvisers. And if you've not already had a look at our website, head over to for information about our shows, including links to buy tickets.

We have two main gigs coming up, plus some exciting plans for August and the Autumn:

28th May / 3pm / Anteros / £8 - Daniel Thompson / Vid Drawler / Tom Jackson (trio), John Butcher & Stale Liavik Solberg (duo), Chris Dowding (solo)

We are really excited to have caught both Daniel Thompson (London-based guitarist originally from Norwich) and John Butcher (improvising saxophonist, who performed at our inaugral Plink Plonk) both on individual tours, performing with musicians from around the UK Europe.

Daniel Thompson’s trio came together in Ljubljana, Slovenia, during a CRAM Records residency. Daniel has performed with Evan Parker, Hannah Marshall, John Edwards, and many others. John Butcher is the world-renowned improvising saxophonist, who performed solo and in duo with David Ross for the first ever Plink Plonk.

This gig will also include a new solo trumpet and electronics piece composed, improvised and performed by Chris Dowding, which is dedicated to the pianist Craig Taborn. The piece is called ‘Piano Angel’. We hope you can come along to this gig..!

29th June / 8pm / Upstairs @ The York / £7 - Sloth Racket / ROOKS

In June, we are very excited to present UK saxophonist Cath Roberts’ quintet Sloth Racket, alongside Norfolk-based no-input mixer and percussion duo ROOKS.

Sloth Racket is a project that mixes graphic notation, deep grooves and free improvisation, led by Cath Roberts. The band includes guitarist Anton Hunter (who performed at Plink Plonk in 2016), alongside tenor saxophonist Sam Andreae, double bassist Seth Bennett, and drummer Johnny Hunter.

The group is held together by Cath’s formidable baritone sax playing, and this gig is part of a UK tour to launch the second Sloth Racket, which, like their debut album ‘Triptych’, will be released on the Luminous Label, linked to the LUME night that Cath co-leads in London.

Playing opposite Sloth Racket on this night are ROOKS. This is a ‘temporary collaboration’ between percussionist Tazelarr Stevenson and no-input mixer player Oliver Payne. The project was devised after the duo witnessed the roosting of 50,000 rooks at Old Buckingham in 2016.

Astounded by the heavily textured and ever changing cacophony the birds produced they were inspired to interpret this natural phenomenon using scatter gun percussion and the flurried and unpredictable  sounds of electronic feedback.

Launching 'The Plank'

Soon we will be launching details of a regular open forum for musicians, improvisers and performers that want to collaborate.

The Plank will be an informal meeting where you have the option to sit and listen, or to fully participate. Sessions will be loosely structured around particular activities, focusing on different areas of collaborative music making (dynamic/texture/duration/playing in duos, trios etc). It will also be a useful place to meet like-minded artists to nurture collaboration outside of The Plank.

We also welcome guest workshops from other players so if you have ideas or specific areas of interest then please bring them along!

We're in the process of finding the right venue for The Plank and as soon as we do, we'll let you know.

Thank you!

A continued thank you to all of our supporters, audience members and performers. It is a delight to have such support for new music in Norwich.
