It's Soon to be June!

Time flys

We are now starting week – wait – what week is this of self-isolation? We’ve lost count!
Most of us are getting used to our ”new normal”.  All over NOTL, it's heartwarming to hear about the great ways residents are helping each other.
In The Village, the VCA received calls from 20 residents who were eager to help out (picking up groceries, liquor, walking dog, getting mail, etc).

Here are other ways people have been helping:

  • Making and donating masks
  • Keeping in touch with friends and family
  • Checking their neighbours are ok
  • Supporting local charities

It’s good to be a Villager!

Newark NeighboursCan you help?

In this “New Normal”, several of our local organizations need our help.  The VCA Board has identified Newark Neighbours as one of these groups that is in need of assistance.
Newark Neighbours, the only food bank and thrift store serving Niagara-on-the-Lake, is a registered charity with an elected Board of Directors and an entirely volunteer staff.  They do not receive financial support from any level of government and their continued operations rely solely on donations received plus sales from their thrift store.  And the thrift store is closed.  The food bank recipients must be residents of NOTL.

How can you help?
Food BankDonate any of the most needed products (peanut butter, strawberry jam, small cans of canned fruit, canned stew, canned kidney beans, canned chili, canned chunky chicken soup, crackers, cereal, flavoured instant oatmeal packets, cleaning wipes, and toilet paper). Note that all items will be sterilized by the volunteers.
Monetary donations can also be made as follows:
  • Mailing a cheque to: Newark Neighbours, 454 Mississauga Street, Suite 150, P.O. Box 1090, Niagara-on-the-Lake, On, L0S 1J0
  • E-transfering from your banking app.  Simply reference their email address (newarkneighbours1@gmail.com)
  • Donate through their website.  You will receive a tax receipt for your donation.
Please consult their website for more details on the wonderful work they do and how you can assist.

If you can help, please identify yourself as a VCA member.  We will get a total from Newark Neighbours later this summer and let you know how much we donated as a community.
On behalf of all the needy folks in our community …. Thank you.

Supporting our Migrant Workers

Garrison HouseAnd speaking of helping the community – The Hawley family and The Garrison House have demonstrated their support - Big Time!

Read how the Hawley family initiated a hot meal program for our migrant workers with the help of The Garrison House staff.  John, Liz and Adam Hawley delivered 500 hot meals to local farm workers.

Here’s the how they did it.

Remember you can order your own dinner from Garrison House too.

canada daySocial Committee Update

Remember the good old days when the VCA Social Committee planned fun stuff for us?  Well they have been quiet for long enough.  And they have something up their collective sleeves!  Stay tuned for some coming activities.  And in the meantime reserve July 1 for further details!

Unsung Heroes

ChrisYes – thank you to all the medical personnel who are working so hard to keep us healthy.
But there are lots of other unsung heroes who are working to serve us every day.

Have you met Chris Olnierczyk?   You probably see him in the village all the time!  He’s always got a big smile!

Yes – the “Mail Delivery Guy”!

Anyone who stops by the mailboxes when Chris is loading them has seen him hustle!  The man is on a time table to load those mailboxes and get on to the next set – and drop parcels to our doors as well!

Chris has been a Mail Guy even before there was The Village – he remembers when it was all a field.  That’s because he’s been delivering mail for about 22 years in this area.  A  St. Catharines resident, Chris has been especially busy during the pandemic with all those extra parcels!  He says it’s been just like Christmas with all the extra boxes and packages of stuff we’ve been ordering.  Especially Mondays of course.

And for those workers who had Victoria Day off – Chris was working to clear the backlog of parcels to be delivered.  He was out in the truck delivering boxes and packages all day.
Thanks Chris – for keeping us connected, supplied and happy.

Like the VCA Newsletter?

Thanks!  We have over 300 addresses on our subscriber list, but our membership is half that.  We won’t drop anyone from the newsletter as we think (hope) it’s of value to all our neighbours. (Even if you leave The Village.)  Of course you can unsubscribe anytime.

If you can suggest any residents (old or new) we should contact to be added to the mailing list please pass either their email or address on to us and we’ll “Hook’em up”!

Thanks, Sue Henry, VCA Communications  (suehenry@rogers.com)

Good Neighbours

One of the best parts of living in The Village is our lovely neighbours who care about our community – and it shows.  We have beautiful gardens and well looked after yards

Walking around The Village is a delight.  However on my walks several neighbours have asked me to remind people to pick-up after their pets!  Really – we have to remind people?

Okay – here it is.  Bag it and Take it home!  And “bio-degradable bags” still have to be put in your garbage – don’t leave them and think they instantly “melt away”.

Please respect your neighbours so we can all enjoy our Village.

Pick it up!

Things to Know When Parking in Niagara-on-the-Lake

As you know the VCA actively campaigned for the revision of the Parking bylaws in NOTL.  Even though we are now allowed to park overnight in Niagara-on-the-Lake, you must respect the following rules.
You are not allowed to park a vehicle:
  • Within 10m (30 ft) of an intersection
  • Within 3m (10 ft) of a fire hydrant
  • On an inner boulevard
  • In front of or within 1.5m (5 ft) of a laneway or driveway or a curb-cut
For all parking regulations, please review the NOTL website regulations.
NOTL Flag

NOTL Flag

Did you know NOTL has a town flag?  Here’s the info if you would like to have your own.

A description of the NOTL coat of arms, flag and badge, known as armorial bearings in heraldry, is provided.

Bingo Results!

BingoDid you play our Quarantine Bingo game?  If you did, you didn't send your winning bingo card to Mona.  In fact - the only entry received for the Bingo last month - was my house!  Yes my card was the only entry and therefore the winning entry.   Greg and I had six lines complete.  Thanks for the wine and chocolates Mona!
Suggestions for other amusements are welcome.  But apparently I'm not allowed to play...
