Congratulations - Communities in Bloom Win
As you may know, a week ago Saturday, in Ottawa, the Communities in Bloom organization announced the Town of Niagara on the Lake as the winner of the International Challenge (Medium) Category, receiving a 5 Blooms-Gold rating, in competition against Beaumont, Alberta; Brooks, Alberta; Dauphin, Manitoba; Grado, Italy; Opatija, Croatia; and Rosemere, Quebec.
You may not know that NOTL also received an Outstanding Achievement Award for the National Capital Commission Floral Displays Award, and a special mention for Volunteer Leadership.
While the entire town can take pride in its efforts to help win the award, we would like to think that The Village and its residents played a significant role in helping NOTL win the Volunteer award.
Last July, judges from Ireland and Canada visited our town for 2 days; they were escorted by our local Communities in Bloom Committee, town staff and 2 councillors. For part of the last morning, the judges were given a tour of The Viillage. John Hawley described the history of our community, the traditional neighbourhood concept and some unique features of The Village architecture and infrastructure.
In addition, Mona Babin (representing the garden maintenance volunteers) and Dale DesIslets (representing the Christmas decorating committee) each gave short presentations on the efforts of dozens of Village residents to beautify our part of the town in both summer and winter. At the end of the tour, The Village Community Association was presented with an Outstanding Volunteer Award by the judges. While the Village wasn’t the only recipient of a volunteer award over those few days, we would like to think that we helped make a lasting impression on the judges.
So, as we move through the late summer stages for the garden volunteers, and gear up for the Christmas decorating season, congratulations are in order for everyone who made a contribution to these group’s efforts over the past year.
