Climate Change and Species Extinction - what role can tourism play in conservation?
The UN have highlighted that conservation tourism benefits only accrue at low numbers. The industry needs to take this on board and develop strategies to ‘carbon proof’ travel. The simple panacea of planting a few trees to off-set travel just won’t cut it anymore.
What of the effects of tourism on habitats and local flora and fauna?

Ian Redmond OBE is a tropical field biologist and conservationist, known globally for his work with mountain gorillas and elephants. He has spent 40 years in research and conservation for the protection of endangered species and their forest habitat, explaining their interdependence and importance to the environment.
Dr Raghu Chundawat is a conservation biologist who has specialised in research on snow leopards and tigers. He conducted a ten year tiger ecology study in a dry tropical forest of central India and is closely involved with tiger conservation in that region. He recently published a book based on this study “The Rise and Fall of The Emerald Tigers”.
Duncan McNair KHS is CEO of Save The Asian Elephant (STAE). Duncan has a longstanding interest in animal welfare causes. In 2017 Duncan was part of a small, key group representing 220 charities and MPs in presenting a letter to the Prime Minister at 10 Downing Street demanding abolition of the UK ivory trade. A proposed ban was announced immediately. Duncan frequently publishes on animal welfare issues of national interest.

Save The Asian Elephants is a not for profit association of prominent professionals, experts and campaigners that informs public opinion on the brutal capture, beating, poaching and abuse for festivals and tourism of these wondrous but beleaguered creatures and the plunder of their habitat; and exerts influence on governments, politicians and the tourist industry to adopt solutions it advances.
There will be a business card draw on the night for two lucky tour operators to join a FAM in March 2020.
