Fair and Representative Elections

This was on Lynn’s List on September 20 but now the Senate is voting on the Freedom to Vote Act (S.2747) on Wednesday, October 20. The bill protects Americans’ freedom to vote in all elections; and, the push is on to get the bill passed.

Some highlights of the bill include:

  •  Establishing federal protections to insulate election officials from undue interference and making intimidation of election workers a crime.

  • Restricting the ability of partisan poll watchers to challenge a voter’s qualifications and requiring states to use voting systems with a verifiable paper trail.

  • Other sections of the bill target partisan gerrymandering, strengthen election security and combat the influence of money in elections.

Under the Act, all states would be required to:

  • Enact an automatic voter registration system through their DMV and ensure all voters have access to online voter registration.

  • Offer at least 15 consecutive days of early in-person voting, including two weekends.

  • Offer same-day voter registration at all polling locations by 2024.

  • Establish no-excuse mail voting for all voters in federal elections, with free postage for returning ballots, accessible drop boxes and an easy way to cure deficient ballots.

  • Count all mail-in ballots sent by Election Day and received within seven days of an election.

  • Count all provisional ballots for eligible races in a county, regardless of the precinct they were cast in.

Contact Senators Ossoff and Warnock BY TUESDAY with the suggested script: My name is ---- and I am from ----. Please get your colleagues on board with the passage of the Freedom to Vote Act (S.2747). Our voting rights are at stake.

Important upcoming dates for the Macon-Bibb November 2, 2021 OLOST election:

  • If you are not already registered, you cannot vote on November 2nd.

  • Early in-person voting started on October 12 and ends October 29.

  • You may request an mail-in (absentee) ballot until October 22.

  • Bibb County has 2 early voting locations: The Board of Elections at 2525 Pio Nono Ave and the Elaine Lucas Senior Center located in Central City Park at 132 Willie Smokie Glover Drive. Both will be open 8:30 - 5:30.

  • Saturday early voting is available on October 23 from 9:00 - 5:00.

Going forward, Lynn’s List will be distributed every two weeks until the Georgia Legislative Session resumes.  The next one will be delivered on November 1st.

There are 56 weeks until the 2022 midterm elections. As always, it’s a marathon and not a sprint. Please stay safe. Get vaccinated if you are not and wear a mask when you don’t know the vaccination status of others.
