legislative update

Legislative Update from Interim Executive Director Peg Birk

Perpich was represented at a legislative hearing this week by Chair Ben Vander Kooi and Ahava Silkey Jones before the House Government Operations and Election Policy Committee, HF1826. Mary Schaefle, executive director of Minnesota Music Educators Association, also testified in support of the importance of the state-wide outreach programs. The bill passed on a party-line vote 10-6 and was re-referred to the House Education Finance Committee. The government affairs committee will be focusing on the Senate and the Governor's Office in the next few weeks with individual meetings with key legislators and testifying where necessary at hearings. We are staying calm, strategic and focused. I encourage those who are interested in more detail to create an account at https://www.leg.state.mn.us/mybills/ to follow the bills. For those who do not, here is a snapshot of bills introduced since my last update.
  • Senate companion bills, SF859 and SF1860 have also been introduced but hearings have not yet been scheduled.
  • SF1765 was introduced to appropriate to Turnaround Arts $375,000 in FY2018 and $375,000 in FY2019.
  • SF640 was introduced to appropriate $2.3 million for capital asset preservation and improvements.
  • SF718 was introduced in for general fund appropriations for $8,330,000 in FY2018 and FY2019 $8,803,000. Also funding for technology of $1,285,000 in FY2018 and $975,000 is also included in the bill.
  • SF1979, a bill related to Perpich board and executive director qualifications was also introduced.
Board Update

A search committee for the new executive director has been selected. They will begin meeting March 23. We have approximately 18 applicants at this point in time. The job posting is open until March 17.

science class

In Material Science, Students have been studying the properties of glass and glazes. Students made their own "glass" out of sugar instead of sand, creating colorful and edible stained glass sheets. They also made their own fiber glass (cotton candy) using a similar method used by factories to make that fluffy pink insulation found in houses to keep out the cold.
