this week at Perpich...
music concert

We had a phenomenal turnout at the music concert Feb. 16th and 17th! The students blew audiences away with their ensemble work. Kudos to the instructors and performers!

On his way to set, Director/Producer Todd Cobery, of ABC's 20/20 In An Instant, stopped by Perpich to chat with Media students last Friday, February 17th. Todd shared his journey as an Independent filmmaker and the skills he has gained, and currently utilizes, in his professional practice. He spoke with students about his roles as Producer and Director, the planning that goes into creating an episode of In An Instant, and tips to help them as they move towards producing their own scripts. It was a rich conversation.
global education

Siran Demir and Pauline Pages from Viry-Chatillon, France arrived January 28 to spend three weeks at Perpich.  They were part of a group of thirty French students from the Lycee St.Louis/St. Clement who  were visiting Minnesota to experience life in an American family and to attend an American high school.

They both observed and participated in a variety of academic classes at Perpich. Pauline focused on literature in the afternoons where she wrote and presented a piece at the Junior literary arts reading. Siran focused on music and was part of an ensemble at the music concert last week. Both girls said they thoroughly enjoyed their stay at Perpich. Their biggest surprises were how "huge" everything is here in the U.S. (they both loved shopping at the Mall of America) and the food which they both described as "different."  While Siran and Pauline were here to practice English, they also enriched French classes through presentations, conversations and a lot of discussions on everything from politics to school life.

Siran was hosted by the Rousse/ Sewell family (Mona) and Pauline was hosted by the Murphy (Cassie ) family. When asked what they most enjoyed here they responded "everything!" They said their families here were "great" and plan to stay in contact with them. They hope to be invited back! Pauline and Siran returned to France on February 18. Bon voyage!

board updates

The Governing Board hosted a listening session at Crosswinds on Thursday, February 23rd.  Members of the Perpich Board heard testimony from students, staff, parents, alumni and the public regarding the future of the Crosswinds.  Saint Paul Public Schools (SPPS) offered a proposal to absorb Crosswinds into the SPPS district with the intention to keep the Crosswinds program, staff and students intact, including a year-round calendar. The district would maintain the commitment to student integration, the arts, environmental science and being a model school. In addition, SPPS would add 11th grade in 2018 and 12th the following year, so that eventually Crosswinds would offer 6th through 12th grades. On Tuesday, February 28 at 5 pm, the Perpich Board will announce its recommendation for the future of Crosswinds.
black history month @ perpich

In honor of Black History Month, we as students have teamed together to recognize this important monument of history. We want to bring attention to Black History at Perpich. February is a month to honor, celebrate, and reflect on the trials Black America has gone through, and continues to go through today. A master narrative is taught to our society to generalize that the most significant part of Black History is slavery. This is not the case. There are greater things to Black History. Our goal as students and informers is to refute these generalizations, and bring forth counter story information: the truth and success of Black lives. During February we hosted documentary viewing and discussion sessions, invited a guest speaker from Neighborhoods Organizing for Change, made protest signs, and invited choreographer Herb Johnson to work with students and present as a part of our Common Experience 2.0.
