M/V Wilson Hawk - Damage on gear shaft and inside gear wheel

We just completed a job for Wilson Shipmanagement´s cargo vessel M/V Wilson Hawk. During an overhaul of the gearbox our customer discovered scratches and marks on the shaft and inside the gear wheel.
Our customer asked maker for advice and maker suggested to machine the inside of the gear and install a new bush and then machine it to fit the shaft. This was when MarineShaft was contacted!

Maker did not have the drawings for the modification and therefore we prepared these documents with DNVGL approval before proceeding with the repair. This service is often provided to our customers.

We machined the gear shaft cone to remove the damages and machined the gear wheel ID for insert of a new bush. The new bush in 42CrMo4 we could manufacture right away as we had the material in stock.

The bush was fitted into the gear wheel using liquid nitrogen. Hence, bush ID was machined and oil-grooves in gear wheel. A surveyor from DNVGL witnessed the cone testing and carried out the final inspection and approval. This was an urgent repair and as always, our dedicated service engineers stepped in and worked extra-long hours to provide the shortest time of delivery.
