2020 is here and I like the sound of 20 – 20. I mentioned in "December news" that MarineShaft closed 2019 with unusually high activity on mobile machining jobs/on-site repairs and 2020 kicked off where we left.

Our engineers travel around the world for different repairs and the past 2 months MarineShaft has allready sent engineers to Oman, Hong Kong, Curacao, Belgium, Turkey and many other countries.

An increasing service request from us is:  Supervising and laser alignment.


Failure on OD Box

An Oil/Chemical tanker docked in Oman due to a failure on the OD Box and MarineShaft was hired in to supervise the disassembling and shaft withdrawal and to carry out alignment check of the shaft line.

Both the jack up test and shaft alignment test showed no deflection or failures on the bearing loads. The alignment test could then remove misalignment as a possible reason for the OD Box failure. This narrowed focus to the OD Box, which meant that our customer could co-operate with Maker on this matter.
Within driving distance, we recently carried out repair for the hybrid ferry MF Copenhagen.

Manufacturing of a new Vulcan coupling and in-situ machining

For Scandlines ferry MF Copenhagen we manufactured a new Vulcan coupling for one of their Azimuth thrusters.

During a planned yard stay and main overhaul, the electric motor shaft was damages when removing the coupling. Scandlines contacted us for manufacturing of a new coupling with
Lloyd´s approval.

The raw material was on our stock and within a few days we could manufacture a completely new coupling. 
Before manufacturing, we went onboard MF Copenhagen to remove the damages on the shaft. The new coupling was then manufactured to fit the new shaft dimension. 
One part of my job, which I enjoy a lot, is travelling to meet customers and represent MarineShaft. Earlier this month, I was onboard MF Copenhagen and I felt very lucky to get a private tour seeing engine room, battery room etc. and finished off, visiting the bridge as we approached Rostock.  

Senior machine engineer Mr. Mads E.K Nielsen expressed his satisfaction with our work for them, which made me quite proud of our skilled technicians. Below you can see a photo from our on-site machining. Everything could be carried out when MF Copenhagen was out of dock and
during operation. Our service engineers also carried out the re-installation. 
I also share a picture I took from the battery room. 231 batteries with an output of 4,5 MW, and energy  content of 1,5 MWH. Scandlines build the first 2 hybrid ferries in Denmark, and they will soon install Rotor Sail onboard MF Copenhagen. Another step to gain fuel reduction.
Raw material for manufacturing of intermediate shaft

Let me show you 2 recent raw material purchases.
This piece with 2 forced on flanches Ø1055/555 x 7000 mm is ready to be machined for an intermediate shaft when requested. This we purchased together with another shaft with the same dimension and 5,7 meter long. Both with Lloyd´s certificate and in material 28Mn6.
