Dear <<Name>>

I have been looking forward to sharing this case with you. For two reasons: First, because the repair and coating method is unique and secondly, because I had the pleasure of visiting SY… Is A Rose at Perini Navi, where she was built, and now returned, due to damages to the propeller equipment and also for regular winter maintenance.

Cold straightening and laser cladding of propeller shafts

SY….IS A ROSE is a 50-meter long luxury sailing yacht. The propulsion equipment includes 2 CPP propeller shafts. MarineShaft received the propeller equipment for repair. Both shafts had minor deflections and pitting problems.

In our workshop in Denmark we started with an inspection and crack test witnessed by the involved classification society ABS. Our repair procedure was approved and after disassembly the equipment, both propeller shafts were machined for laser cladding.

We used the powder material Inconel 625 for coating. Inconel 625 is an excellent material for reconstruction and coating. Our laser cladding unit applies 0.8 mm per layer. Both shafts measured Ø145 x 5887 mm.

It is possible to apply any type of powder regardless of the base material. The laser cladding technique assures a 100% attachment to the base material, which gives a lot of possibilities for upgrading the shaft.

Besides laser cladding, we carried out cold straightening of both shafts and polishing of hub and propeller blades.

The transport back to La Spezia was arranged by MarineShaft and everything was packed safely.
When I asked the owner for permission to mention this repair, I received a nice reply from the Yachts Manager:
I am the Yachts Manager of the fleet of the Owner of Is A Rose and I have only to thank you for the great and professional work on our shafts”.

Thank you for having MarineShaft carry out this repair. I personally also want to thank the Captain, the Chief Engineer and Rotation Engineer onboard SY… Is A Rose for the warm welcome when I visited.

Unfortunately,  ..Is A Rose was all covered up – the propeller equipment was already in Denmark.  So, I did not get to see her full beauty and the picture below is borrowed from the shipyard. But who knows, perhaps someday she will sail to Denmark ;D
Let´s stay with the laser cladding technique in this email. Another case I want to share with you, is a repair case, that we carried out for the Danish Shipyard Karstensens in Skagen.

Tugboat - M/V Belos
Modification and repair of servomotor cylinder for VOITH propeller equipment

Due to wear, the cylinder needed to be repaired and MarineShaft suggested to use laser cladding to weld up the cylinder piston.
At our workshop the servomotor was disassembled, and 2 layers of Inconel 625 was applied to the piston. The inner diameter of the servomotor cylinder was machined to fit the new dimension of the piston.
This December we have had unusually high activity on mobile machining/on-site jobs. So many engineers have traveled to North, East, West and South for jobs the whole month.  With the time difference I must say MarineShaft really do work 24/7.

I look forward to sharing some of the cases in our January 2020 newsletter.

Christmas is almost here. I thank you all for your interest in our newsletter and wish you all a Merry Christmas.

Best regards
MarineShaft A/S
