Compared to others, this New Year's is truly exceptional. A lot of individuals are frightened about their loved ones, who may be involved in China's massive outbreak.

The three-year pandemic has repeatedly made us realize that love and family are more essential than everything else in this world.

Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone whose lives have been impacted by this pandemic, and with those who are feeling helpless, exhausted, and alone.

You are not alone!

The trials of 2022 will only make us stronger and more resilient. In the new year, let us embrace the present, appreciate life, and grant our hearts eternal brightness and confidence.

Happy New Year to you and your loved ones, and may you all find peace and contentment in your daily lives.

Elaine Peng, Executive Director & Founder

2023 Lunar New Year Parade, JANUARY 29, 2023 • 11 AM–1 PM

The Lunar New Year is celebrated by two billion people in the United States and throughout the world. On September 30, 2022, Governor Newsom officially signed AB 2596 into law! When Governor Newsom made the announcement, tears, cheers, and bells were ringing throughout our state as every API Community started to celebrate. Our nation's past history included some very discriminatory laws against API communities including, the Chinese Exclusion Act and the Japanese internment during WW2. This new law is a giant step forward. We applaud the Governor for standing firm in his commitment to equity and diversity.

The Year of the Rabbit begins January 22, 2023. The rabbit symbolizes patience and luck. This year should be a fruitful one. All the work you've put in last year shall bear fruit this year, especially for those who are pure of heart. There will be an extra bit of luck for those willing to take the chance.

The Year of the Rabbit 2023 will bring less anger and more joy!

With the holidays comes the peak of a fresh wave of epidemics in the United States. Despite the fact that the flu has reached its peak this season, the number of hospitalized patients of the Covid-19 continues to rise. Since Thanksgiving, the number of infections in Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, and other California counties has more than doubled, and the number of hospitalizations has climbed by 77%, primarily among the elderly who have not been properly vaccinated.

People over the age of 65 accounted for nearly 90% of mortality while having less than 25% bivalent booster vaccine coverage. The elderly also have a low utilization of the Covid specific medication - Paxlovid. A high number of these deaths are avoidable.

⚠️Vaccination: myturn.ca.gov, or go straight to various pharmacies and clinics (the Covid booster dose can be blended with the flu vaccination)

for further vaccine information: https://mp.weixin.qq.com/s/aBjSn8YdU6NN3oSFyU6Oqw

⚠️Covid One-stop Service: https://covid-19-test-to-treat-locator-dhhs.hub.arcgis.com/  People can use this website to find nearby one-stop service pharmacies and visit them for a quick check. If your test is positive and you have high-risk indicators, the pharmacist will promptly issue you a prescription. You can take Pfizer Plaxlovid for a five-day course of treatment at home without going to a hospital or clinic. The federal government covers all expenditures, and patients are not required to pay anything. This one-stop service is currently offered by CVS, Walgreens, and Walmart.

OCIC and MHACC co-hosted the Bay Area's first large-scale winter solstice-themed street fair on December 3rd and 4th. The two-day event was accompanied by light rain and the early-winter chill. The different kiosks, foods, and activities available on-site were unforgettable.

Numerous residents have been drawn to the all-day stage performances, free Weiquan glutinous rice dumplings, an on-site exchange of Huang Liushuang commemorative coins, and award-winning photographic activities.

A number of present and recently elected politicians attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the street party. In her speech, Oakland state Rep. Mia Bonta stated: "Rain brings vitality, which means we will greet a greener spring next year."

Lena Tam, the recently elected county councilor for A County's third district, expressed her winter solstice blessings to the public. She stated that she has worked in Chinatown for 30 years and that the efforts of the OCIC have substantially aided the development of the neighborhood. Recovery is essential.

Sheng Tao, Oakland's newly elected mayor, was invited to the White House but was unable to attend the street gathering in person. She sent officials to wish the Chinese American community happy holidays, stating that "Oakland will usher in a brand new day."

On December 21, volunteers from MHACC came to John George Psychiatric Hospital to wrap Christmas gifts for inpatients. The scene was very warm and uplifting.

Volunteer Terri’s words will remain in everyone's heart: They were sick, hospitalized, and thought the whole world had forgotten them. But these gifts and cards let the patients know that they have not been forgotten, and there are still people who remember them ❤️

Merry Christmas and New Year to all 🐰
