Shabbat Book Talk with
Rabbi Ellen Bernstein

This Saturday, December 14: 
We are delighted to welcome Rabbi Ellen Bernstein, who will be joining us this Shabbat to talk about her new Haggadah, The Promise of the Land.

10 AM: Justin Sundell-Thomas will lead a meditative & rhythmic Shabbat morning chanting service

12 PM: Kiddush lunch and talk with Rabbi Ellen Bernstein.

Childcare will be provided. All are welcome for either or both parts of this day. Your vegetarian potluck contributions are appreciated, but not required.
The Promise of the Land: A Passover Haggadah by Ellen Bernstein: Rooted in scholarship and a poetic sensibility, Ellen Bernstein's new Passover haggadah maintains that the Jewish origin story is deeply rooted in the land/the earth, and that freedom is only possible when we have a relationship with a land--the land that we belong to, wherever we live.

Amy Leos-Urbel will be returning to Temple Israel to lead an Interactive Workshop on Anti-Semitism - Sunday, January 19, 12:30-5:00PM.

Drive-up Drop-off Donations.....pull up to the front of GHS on Barr Avenue to drop-off - Non-Perishable Food Items for our local food pantry, the Center for Self-Reliance, and Winter Gear - new or gently used gloves, hats, scarves, jackets, coats, boots for adults and children

December 25, 2-6:30 PM: "Festive and Healthy Dishes for Hanukah" - Cooking Class in Shutesbury

Join Leslie Cerier, “The Organic Gourmet” renown farm to table vegetarian chef, cookbook author and cooking teacher for a hands-on cooking class featuring several delicious seasonal, vegetarian dishes cooked with healthy fats (ghee and virgin coconut oil) to enhance the flavor of your Hanukah parties. Thanks to the Generous Sponsorship from the Harold Grinspoon Foundation; the cost of this class is only $20 per person. Class is limited to 15 People. December 22-29: Shine A Light for Social Justice with BAJC

This holiday season, The Brattleboro Area Jewish Community (BAJC) will stand strong for social justice with the second annual Shine A Light for Social Justice project, held from December 22nd -29th . Shine A Light was a great success last year, with a diverse group of over 200 people participating in candle lighting at eight different locations in Brattleboro.

Local businesses will host a night of candle lighting and share the uplifting message of Hanukkah with a wider audience in support of Human Rights issues.  All are welcome to stand with us at 5:30 p.m. at the following locations:

  • Sunday December 22nd at Sam’s Army/Navy for Religious Freedom

  • Monday December 23rd at Centre Congregational Church for Climate Crisis

  • Tuesday December 24th at the Brattleboro Food Coop for Mental Health

  • Wednesday December 25th at the Latchis Theatre for LGBTQ Rights

  • Thursday December 26th at Elliot Street Fish ‘n Chips for Equality for Women.  

  • Friday December 27th at the Brooks House Atrium for Homelessness

  • Saturday December 28th at Gallery in the Woods for Racial Justice

  • Sunday December 29th at Everyone’s Books for Immigrant Justice
