This month, we are featuring this incredible startup from Malta that helps children with dyslexia and other learning disabilities learn and adapt.
A great solution starts with a great challenge. This is the iSmart story.
The idea for iSmart was fueled by one of our colleagues at the time and her passion and dedication as a mother of a dyslexic child. Her frustration towards the lack of support within the schooling system for children with learning difficulties ignited the initial concept. She dreamt of an application that could help dyslexic students collect information - read, write, comprehend, and focus.
The dream became a reality when our company, together with other partners managed to win a fierce competition for European Union funds (Lifelong Learning Programme). As a result, Project iSmart was awarded. Following an exciting 3 years which included its fair share of challenges, piloting periods in 3 countries, beta versions and a ton of paperwork, we decided to invest even further.
Backed up enthusiastically by educational experts, programmers, designers and the dyslexia community itself, we believe that our apps will revolutionize the way students learn, study and grow to reach their full potential sooner than ever. Learn more about our team here.
Some of iSmart's features:
*This iSmart function helps you read and write text in multiple languages.
*This text-to-speech feature helps everyone to read those difficult words in multiple languages. Simply tap on the word, sentence or paragraph that you see on the screen and you will hear it read back to you.
*iSmart allows readers to open any eBook or educational resource and adapt the text according to one’s preferences.
*Easily confused characters in languages (like b and d in English) can be highlighted in a different colour. The same also applies to digits that can be confusing (like 2 and 5).
*Build your mind map whilst reading your text. Research shows that the use of visual representations can help everyone.
*iSmart mimics a physical reading ruler which focuses the reader on one line at a time.
*You can download iSmart on any Android or iOS device. Our app is available in:
English, Finnish, Italian, Maltese, Norwegian, Polish, Spanish and Swedish.
*Sort your own materials, eBooks and educational content in iSmart in our simple library function. The iSmart material section which is available on the app and even on the web allows users to upload any documents, with the option to share and short according to your own preferences.
