Monthly feature:

Yehuda Elram with EggXYt

Hi all,

This month, we are featuring a startup from Israel that enables a sustainable future in the chicken industry.

The chicken industry has developed and optimized two main breeds for human consumption. The Broilers, a fast growing, fatty breed for meat, and the Layers, a skinny breed that lays about six eggs per week. The Layers are those who lay 14 billion fertile eggs annually. These eggs are sent to hatcheries, where they are incubated for 3 weeks and only after they are hatched–are they manually identified as male or female by human chicken-sexers. Since male chicks cannot lay eggs, and are not used in the meat industry, 50 percent of the chicks– seven billion male chicks – are immediately sent to their death, wasting billions of dollars.

Using CRISPR, a cutting-edge gene-editing tool,
eggXYt is able to transform this wasteful practice. The technology enables to biomark the male chromosome of a chicken embryo, so that the sex of the chick is detectable once the egg is laid, and more importantly, before the chick hatches.
