Now let's share some exciting developments from Elena Sinel - CEO and Founder of Acorn Aspirations & Teens in AI - winner of the 2019 CER Internet Entreprenuers Prize.
GIRLS in AI
March 08, LONDON – Calling for change to address the persistent gender gap across STEM careers, Teens In AI the third edition of its Girls In AI Hackathon. Over 250 girls learning to use AI to address UN Sustainable Development Goals.
The following cities have participated in the hackathons:
● Johannesburg, South Africa
● Nairobi, Kenya
● Paris, France
● London, UK
● Paisley, UK
Elena Sinel, Founder and CEO of Acorn Aspirations & Teens in AI, says: “A shortage of STEM skills costs businesses billions of dollars every year, impacting UK businesses alone by about £1.5 billion a year. Yet with so few girls, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds studying STEM subjects, we are depriving ourselves of potential talent. At Teens In AI, we employ a problem-solving approach to STEM learning and increase exposure to female role models to show more young girls that a bright STEM career isn’t simply reserved for boys.” She continued: “We cannot do this on our own, and so we are constantly on the lookout for like-minded corporate partners who will work with us to grow this community of enterprising young people who want to shape the future of the world to create one
which is inclusive, sustainable and critical to long-term global success.”
Acorn Aspirations is a social enterprise in the education space. Through our Girls In AI initiative and our holistic curriculum, we aim to inspire young girls aged 12-18 to use AI and entrepreneurship for social good. We work with like-minded corporate partners like QuantumBlack, Microsoft, Mastercard, JP
Morgan, BBC, CogX and others to further our work.
About Teens In AI:
Teens In AI is an Acorn Aspirations initiative launched at the AI for Good Global Summit at the UN in May 2018. It exists to increase diversity and inclusion in artificial intelligence. It aims to democratise AI and create opportunities for underrepresented talent through a combination of expert mentoring, talks,
workshops, hackathons, bootcamps and accelerators, company tours and networking opportunities that give young people aged 12-18 early exposure to AI for social good. The vision is for AI to be developed by a diverse group of thinkers and doers advancing AI for humanity’s benefit.
