Geophysicist Rebecca Bendick presented a paper this fall on earthquakes that a lot of people took to mean that 2018 was going to be one devastatingly shaky year. Bendick wants you to understand that her research indicates a pattern which is in no way consecutively predictive. Her work is part of a much larger body off research into earthquakes, not a standalone oracle. We still don't know when earthquakes are going to strike, much less how strong or frequent they'll be.
Read more here, and then send Bendick a thank-you both for conduction the research which may ultimately lead to better predictions, and for trying to correct the reporting on what she has done so far. Scientists can no longer let click-bait reporting distort real and serious work.
