Official Austin Area Alumnae Chapter Newsletter supporting the Texas State University Chapter, Kappa Epsilon

  Fall 2020
Vol. 5, Issue no. 2

President's Pen

Welcome to October...finally!

Honestly, it has seemed like an extra long year for all of us for a variety of reasons, from personal to national and even international levels. One thing I'm most happy to see now more than ever, though, is how much we've come together as a sisterhood during this time to support one another. Outreach to sisters near and far to uplift, protect, celebrate, pray for, march for, donate to, and love on each other shows this world exactly how our sisterhood can impact the world.

As the leaves start to turn and mornings become crisper, let's not stop that celebration of each other! And we are excited to have an event to do just that: a Celebration of Sisterhood which will include the Lighting of the Tapers (ritual celebrating Honors of Epsilon Pi), Memorial Service (ritual for those women who have entered Chapter Grand), and Milestone Anniversaries celebration (25, 50, 60 and 70 years). Be sure to keep an eye out for bits of information about all of the above as you read through the rest of the newsletter.

In addition to all of the praise above, I would be remiss if I didn't take time to brag about those giving our chapter (and myself) the most energy, and that's the rest of our board of officers and all of our chapter advisors. Take some time to thank any or all of them any chance you get. They are hard working volunteers who are great representations of our motto "Loving, Leading, Lasting!"

Enjoy these dwindling days of sunlight, don't forget some self-care and join us for some autumn sisterhood soon!

Loyally,
Elizabeth Jones, 2020-2021 Alumnae Chapter President
Epsilon Nu, 2007

Collegian Updates
Texas State Masks Up for Primary Recruitment

Despite COVID-19 (and a virtual recruitment!) the Kappa Epsilon chapter at Texas State had a very successful Primary Recruitment. They were able to recruit 54 new members! These are the highest recruitment numbers that the chapter has yet to have, plus it was also the highest numbers on campus out of all the chapters. Go ladies!!!

The Austin Alpha Gamma Delta Alumnae Chapter was able to help provide 100 masks to the chapter for recruitment. Thank you to all who have helped donate money and/or paid their social dues so that we were able to achieve that.

Alumnae Updates
Keeping Alumnae Safe With Virtual Gatherings
This summer rolled by quickly and brought with it a plethora of ways for sisters to connect! The chapter had a family Netflix watch party, a family trivia night, a Saturday Brunch, book club meet ups and, of course, happy hours to bring our sisters and their friends and family together!

Looking forward, the chapter is planning a celebration of our sisters celebrating anniversaries, receiving honors and remembering sisters who have entered Chapter Grand. As of now, this is planned for November 30th with more details to come!

Everyone knows how difficult it has been to get through these past few months, so any amount of levity and connection has been a welcome respite from being home and only donning sweats for so many weeks. Hopefully, with several upcoming events, the rest of our members can join us before the end of 2020!

Celebrating our Sisters
As a recurring theme throughout this quarter's newsletter, we have many sisters and events to celebrate! Check out the highlighted sisters below and congratulate any of them at the next chance in person or virtually.

And be sure to join us for a special celebration of each of these women and more on November 30th!
Honors of Epsilon Pi

This year's Convention may have looked different, but it didn't keep IHQ from having a fun celebration for members who were awarded Honors this year. And one of our very own, Sydney Smith McCann, was awarded her first Honor, the Arc of Epsilon Pi!

Sydney has given above and beyond service to our chapter and the alumnae Panhellenic chapter in Austin, even when an Alpha Gam  chapter wasn't nearby. We are beyond excited for and proud of Sydney and thank her for all she has and continues to do for our chapter and the overall Panhellenic community. Here's to even more years involved in both alumnae chapters and all the happiness, hard-work and honors to follow!

New IRD Chair

Meet our new IRD Chair Kaila Coolidge! She is a graduate from Tarleton State University and alumna of Epsilon Upsilon chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta. She currently works as a teacher at Jarrell ISD. We are so excited to have her on board to help us with 2020-2021 IRD in the spring! Please welcome her to our officer board at an upcoming event!

Do You Know How Many Austin Area Alpha Gams There Are?

Thanks to our Permanent Secretary Vanessa Canfield, you can!

This fall, she pulled together all the member demographics from the Austin area to show some statistics of our overall membership, from the states/provinces and chapters we represent to how many alumnae we have overall in the area.

**We want to feature YOU and the chapter you represent!**
Send us fun info and pictures of your time as a collegian and get featured in upcoming newsletters!

Austin Area Panhellenic Association Updates

In response to the coronavirus pandemic, the Austin Alumnae Panhellenic Association (AAPA) had to cancel their annual spring luncheon in April. This event is the primary fundraiser for the AAPA annual collegiate scholarships.

Providing financial assistance to initiated undergraduate collegiate sorority women from the Austin area through these scholarships is some of the most important work the AAPA does as an association. This year, due to the economic impact of this health crisis in our community, funding these scholarships has an even greater priority.

As a member of the AAPA, Alpha Gamma Delta, alongside the other alumnae sororities, has been asked to help fund these scholarships!

As a chapter we generally support the AAPA the scholarship luncheon through purchasing event tickets and supplying a basket for silent auction. Although the luncheon was cancelled, the need for these scholarships remains.

We need your support to make these scholarships happen!

Will you make a donation of $25 or more to help fund the annual scholarship?

Please donate today at https://app.hellofund.com/view/2ywnd93g to fund these scholarships.

When the Greek alumnae women of Austin unite, great things happen!

Thank you for providing the financial assistance our collegiate sorority women need to remain active with their collegiate chapter and become the remarkable Greek alumnae women of tomorrow.

If you have any questions, please contact Paula Greenfield, AAPA President, at paulasellsaustin@gmail.com.

Amber Peasley (above, middle with flowers) was the first Alpha Gamma Delta at Texas State to receive this scholarship from the AAPA. She was initiated at Kappa Epsilon at Texas State University in 2017 and graduated in 2019. Read from her about how much being awarded this scholarship meant to her:

"Receiving this scholarship from the AAPA meant the world to me, and it benefited my collegiate career so much. I paid for college mostly on my own using student loans, so being awarded this scholarship helped to minimize the student debt that I currently have. It meant the world to me to be the first Alpha Gam to win this scholarship, and it helped me to set and example for the women in my chapter as the Vice President of Academics."

Help support other women like Amber by donating today to the AAPA scholarship fund!
