Dear Friends,
It's hard to believe the holidays are nearly upon us. Obviously, this year will feel very different as many of us will not be spending it with our families. This got me thinking … if I could spend the holidays with anyone, who would it be?
For me, the answer is easy — I would give anything to be with my grandmother this holiday season. How is it possible she passed nearly a decade ago? At my imaginary holiday feast, Grandma Dot would sit at the head of the table, holding court with a dry Martini and her razor-sharp wit. She was my favorite person in the whole world, she loved me fiercely and unconditionally, and understood me when I didn’t really yet understand myself. As a kid I spent two weeks at Grandma Dot’s house in St. Louis every summer. A typical day started with pizza for breakfast and ended at Dairy Queen. Our bond only grew stronger over the years, and I vividly recall the day I got a fake ID and we celebrated at her regular watering hole with an adult beverage and her favorite meal, a grouper sandwich.
I see this relationship repeating itself with my mom and daughter. Now that I find myself caught in the generational middle, at times admittedly I find their inside jokes excessive, but then I recall those precious, raucous good times with Grandma Dot and I can’t help but smile. Everyone should have this kind of love in their life.
As you can see, grandma love runs deep in my family. Read “How’s Sherry?” below to see how Georgia’s beloved grandmother is living her best life.
I wish you all a safe, happy and healthy holiday season and truly hope — if only in your mind — you are able to spend time with the ones you hold dear. For me, all roads lead back to grandma’s house.
Best regards, Lauren
