Volunteer for Canyon Councils

Emigration Canyon Metro Township is served by three entities: the Emigration Canyon Metro Township Council, the Emigration Metro Township Planning Commission, and the Emigration Canyon Community Council.

These entities are comprised of your neighbors, individuals who volunteer their time to help improve the canyon community. The Emigration Canyon Community Council and the Emigration Canyon Metro Township Planning Commission have current openings, and there will be an election this fall for seats on the Emigration Canyon Metro Township Council. Read more below about each of these organizations and how to get involved.

Emigration Canyon Metro Township Council

The Emigration Canyon Metro Township Council is an elected 5-member council serving staggered 4-year terms.  The ECMETRO council is responsible for reviewing and revising ordinances, overseeing municipal services, and interfacing with Salt Lake County planning and engineering. The ECMETRO council selects two council members to act as Mayor and Pro Tem Mayor. The ECMETRO mayor sits on the Greater Salt Lake Municipal Services District (GSLMSD) board. ECMETRO council members sit of the boards of Unified Police, Unified Fire, Municipal Waste, and other Salt Lake County entities. This year two members, David Brems and Jenifer Hawks are up for reelection. Robert Paine has announced his resignation (he is moving out the canyon) so his seat is also up for election. Any voter registered in the canyon can run. You must file your candidacy in person at the Salt Lake County Clerk's office at 2001 South State St, room S1-200, between June 3 - 7, and pay a filing fee of $50.

Emigration Canyon Metro Township Planning Commission

The ECMETRO Township Planning Commission is a 7-member board. There are currently openings for the ECMETRO Planning Commission. Planning Commissioners are appointed by the EC Metro Township Council. The Planning Commission reviews and makes recommendations on the general plan, FCOZ, planning, building and permitting that requires additional public hearings, and conditional uses. Contact Robert Pinon ( or David Brems ( for more information.

Emigration Canyon Community Council

The Emigration Canyon Community Council is stand-alone non-profit organization providing “grassroots” representation for Emigration Canyon residents. ECCC is comprised of 12 residents of Emigration Canyon who serve staggered 4-year terms.  Elections for the Emigration Canyon Community Council are held on even years with 6 members up for election in each election cycle. ECCC is provides a voice for canyon residents to ECMETRO Township Council and the Planning Commission, formulating recommendations to those councils on issues that are important to canyon residents. In addition, through its website, periodic newsletters, announcements and social media, ECCC addresses issues of safety, development, and communications by providing information and education on matters impacting canyon residents.  Fire safety is a primary example of this activity as ECCC organizes the annual Firewise event, working to educate residents on wild fire safety. For more information on becoming involved with ECCC, contact Lisa Schneider at
