Celebrate Earth Day

Dear Friends,

Earth Day is about celebrating our planet and all the creatures we share it with. The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation works every day to protect threatened ecosystems and wildlife across the globe. Over the past few years, we have honed an innovative and targeted approach to conserving key, iconic species threatened with habitat loss and extinction. The Action Funds we have created are some of LDF’s most strategic and impactful investments and are creating a new model of philanthropy: supporting the best ideas from an array of partners, rather than one organization, and raising significant new resources for the best efforts in the field.

See below to learn more about the Elephant Crisis Fund, Lion Recovery Fund, and Shark Conservation Fund, and consider an Earth Day donation to LDF that will invest directly in the long-term safety and resilience of these majestic species.

Justin Winters, Executive Director

Elephant Crisis Fund

Tens of thousands of elephants are killed for their tusks each year in a devastating wave of poaching that is sweeping across Africa. But there is hope.

To battle this surge in ivory poaching, the Elephant Crisis Fund (ECF) is identifying and supporting the most effective projects and partners in Africa, and in ivory consuming nations, to end the ivory crisis. The ECF exists to fuel their efforts, encourage collaboration, and deliver rapid impact on the ground – even within 24 hours of a poaching crisis.

Lion Recovery Fund

Africa's lion population has declined by half over the past 25 years. The Lion Recovery Fund (LRF) drives your investment to game-changing actions by the most effective, vetted partners who work collaboratively to bring lions back.

LRF aspires to double the number of lions in Africa, regaining those lions lost over the past 25 years. We are committed to seeing thriving savannah landscapes where Africa’s people, its economic development and its lions all coexist.

Shark Conservation Fund

Sharks and rays represent one of the oldest and most diverse group of animals on Earth. But many shark and ray species are threatened with extinction because of human demand for their fins, meat, leather, liver, and gills.

The Shark Conservation Fund (SCF), formerly the Global Partnership for Sharks and Rays, works to halt the overexploitation of the world’s sharks and rays, preventing extinctions, reversing declines and restoring populations.
