Only 9% of the world’s plastic waste is recycled, but what does it really mean when this waste goes “away”? For decades, developed countries have been exporting plastic waste that is collected for recycling to developing countries. But once this plastic waste is exported, it is challenging to document where exactly it ends up and how it is managed. This issue is now being amplified as China, the world’s largest importer of waste, has implemented new policies effectively upturning the global trade of plastic scrap. Learn about the history and outlook of global plastic waste trade and what this means for South Africa!
