The Insider

Wednesday, March 6
Hey there.  Good news: winter is officially over in just 14 days. Better news: spring is only 14 days away. Best news:  the high is 60+ degrees every day for the second half of this month.  Hang in there...
here's the latest

Richmond Black Restaurant Experience Week is in full swing and you have til Sunday to check it out!  Need some recommendations?  Start at Urban Hang Suite or Brewer's Cafe for coffee and breakfast, grab lunch at Soul Taco or Pig & Brew, and for dinner hit up MiniBarVagabond, or Mama J's (recently nationally recognized for their outstanding service, more on that below).  If you're feeling fancy, Spoonbread Bistro is the move but make sure you get reservations.  Instagram has the full list of participants as well as event updates, restaurant highlights, and more.  Go!

Also happening this month is Richmond Brunch Weekend (RBW)!  Founded just four years ago by As Told Over Brunch to support VCU Massey Cancer Center, RBW has raised over $55,000.  All YOU have to do is go to brunch at any participating restaurant March 23-24 and they'll donate 15% of proceeds from the weekend.  Pro tip: several restaurants donate even more proceeds when you order their special brunch weekend beverage so ask your server about it.  Oh, and Nightingale Ice Cream Sandwiches made a Cinnamon Toast Brunch bar and 20% of their proceeds are being donated.  Those guys are not going to last so hurry.

Speaking of brunch, or should we say, BRUNCH, last night was the first night they opened for dinner.  Yes, you read that right, brunch for dinner at BRUNCH.  Will the wait for dinner be as long?  We'll have to report back...

Longoven was named Restaurant of the Year according to Style Weekly.  Take a look at behind-the-scene photos, food pics, and why they chose this spot.  Past winners include Brenner Pass, L'Opossum, and Roosevelt.  While we're on the topic of Style Weekly, voting for their annual "Best of" edition closes March 15.

The 2019 Friday Cheers lineup was released yesterday and to celebrate we're giving away a 3-pack of season tickets!  The first concert kicks off Friday, May 5 so mark your calendar.  For our Richmond newbies, Friday Cheers is an annual outdoor concert series that takes place on Brown's Island every Friday in May and June.  Tickets are $5 or $10 depending on the show and once you've entered there are plenty of food, beer and wine trucks to help you celebrate the weekend.  It's one of the first signs that Summer is upon us in RVA and we're already excited...

Lewis Ginter is excited for Summer too because they shared their 2019 concert series lineup, Flowers After 5, which happens every Thursday evening beginning June 6 through September 12.  The event is free for members, $13 for adults, $11 for seniors, $8 for kids ages 3-12, and free under 3.  On select nights you can bring your dog as part of their Fidos After 5 partnership with the Richmond SPCA.

Pharrell made Virginia happy on Monday when he announced Something in the Water, a music festival to happen in Virginia Beach April 26-28 featuring Migos, Missy Elliot, Diplo, Travis Scott, Jaden Smith, and others.  Tickets go on sale this Friday at 12pm.

Yesterday, Yelp released a list of the “Top U.S. Destinations for Food Lovers."  They ranked Richmond #7 noting, “Virginia is for lovers… food lovers that is. Richmond’s growing culinary scene is home to local favorites like Sedona Taphouse,  Billy Jack’s Shack and Jack Brown’s Beer and Burger Joint.”  The 2019 list was compiled using data from Yelp including ratings, reviews, cuisine diversity and percentage of food photos.

Basically the Grammys of the restaurant world, the 2019 James Beard Award Semifinalists, were announced last week and ICYMI, Richmond made a mark in multiple categories:

  • Outstanding Baker: Evrim Dogu and Evin Dogu of Sub Rosa Bakery
  • Outstanding Service: Mama J’s
  • Outstanding Wine, Spirits, or Beer Producer: An Bui of Mekong and The Answer Brewpub
  • Best chef mid-Atlantic: Sandeep “Sunny” Baweja of Lehja
