In Memory of Grace Sweeney

Grace Sweeney, educator, activist, and best friend/partner/spouse of City Council Member Pete Murdock, passed away Monday Evening.  Grace said she did not want any formal memorial service but instead wanted people to be happy and do good things.  Grace and Pete also lived a life where those three little words couple say not only meant "I love you" but also "Agitate! Educate! Organize!

Grace and Pete were both founding members of our Co-op beginning with the bag Co-op in the 70's.  Grace continued to volunteer and both were members and strong advocates of cooperative values
Grace will be cremated and her ashes placed next to Pete's in Highland Cemetery.

Charoset is a traditional Passover dish of apples, walnuts, wine and honey, served as part of the Seder ritual. Each Jewish ethnic community has its own variations on the dish, so feel free to adapt it to your liking! You can enjoy this tasty apple salad over oatmeal at breakfast or as a side for lunch or dinner.


  • 3 large apples, finely chopped
  • 1 cup walnuts, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup golden raisins
  • 1/4 cup kosher red wine or grape juice
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon fresh lemon zest
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 pinch salt


  1. In a large bowl, combine the chopped apples, walnuts and raisins. In a cup, stir the red wine or grape juice, honey, lemon zest and cinnamon. When well mixed, pour over the apple mixture. Add a pinch of salt, if desired, and toss to mix.
  2. Serve immediately, or cover tightly and refrigerate for later.

Serving Suggestions

During the Passover Seder, charoset is served with matzo. It can also be enjoyed over oatmeal at breakfast or as a sweet side for lunch or dinner.
