Focusing on Mental Health & Wellness
for You and Your Family

The fires around Oroville and across Butte county are challenging and may cause angst for many in our community, especially those closely connected to the Camp Fire.  Our Butte County community is already dealing with far reaching COVID related challenges.   Now many in our county are once again suffering additional loss and trauma.

We are reaching out to our families and staff to share resources in case you, your child, or a family member are struggling during these very difficult times.  Counselors, psychologists and teachers across the district are sharing activities that promote social, emotional and mental health.  In addition, Chico Unified is sharing resources, including those listed in the newsletter below, available to help students and families who are experiencing wellness challenges.

We encourage all in our Chico Unified community to practice self-care during these increasingly difficult times.  Please do not hesitate to reach out to your teacher or site support team if you or your child needs assistance. We know this year has not been easy, and we hope you find these resources helpful.

What is Self-Care?

Self-care
is anything you do to be good to yourself which improves your mood and energy levels. When you practice self-care, it helps you recognize your emotional responses to stress, and develops coping skills to manage them.

There are many types of self-care strategies, including sensory self-care. Sensory self-care is a strategy that helps you become aware of the sensations around you, so you can be more present in the moment allowing for anxieties to fade away.

Sensory Self-Care Ideas:

  • Feeling the water on your skin during a hot bath or shower.
  • Lying down and listening to music with your eyes closed.
  • Sitting in the heat of the afternoon sun.
  • Having a small square of the most delicious chocolate.
  • Holding a pet in your arms.
