Summer 2017

Summer recess is a brilliant opportunity for me to make more time for constituency visits when I'm not in Holyrood. Even though the weather hasn't always stayed sunny, it's always a privilege to meet constituents out and about at local surgeries.

The biggest development this week is of course the opening of the new Queensferry Crossing over the Forth. It's been a fantastic experience watching it being constructed over the last few years, and I'm delighted that it's finally here. It's a great example of the Scottish Government delivering for Fife and I'm looking forward to my first journey across.

On a personal note, can I thank you all for your messages of kindness this summer. It means a great deal.

Yours for Scotland,
Jenny Gilruth MSP
MSP for Mid Fife & Glenrothes
In the Constituency
Opening of the Queensferry Crossing
After years of construction, the Queensferry Crossing is finally open. I was privileged to visit the construction site last summer with Shirley-Anne Somerville MSP. This is a fantastic Scottish Government project which will be a huge benefit to constituents - particularly those who commute to Edinburgh. We all well remember the winter of 2015 when Fife  was cut off due to the Forth Road Bridge closing. The new bridge is a vital link for Fifers - I'm looking forward to my own first crossing soon!
Surgery Tour Day
I had a very busy constituency surgery tour on Friday 11th August, visiting venues in Upper Largo, Lundin Links, Kinglassie and Macedonia in Glenrothes. It was great to hold surgeries in new locations and meet new constituents.

Since I was first elected in May 2016, I’ve held regular surgeries in Glenrothes, Markinch and Leven. However, not everyone has the ability to travel as easily as others, as some constituents have issues with mobility or limited transport. As such, I’m looking to expand the locations where I host my surgeries on more tour days in future.
IFRA Departure at Thornton Fire Station with Annabelle Ewing MSP
I was delighted to wish the International Fire and Rescue Association Scotland volunteers all the best as they departed on Mission 60 from Thornton to Bosnia. Their departure was marked at a visit to Thornton Fire Station with the Scottish Government's Minister for Community Safety and Legal Affairs, Annabelle Ewing MSP.

IFRA took over tenancy at the Thornton Fire Station site from Fife Council last year, and offers experienced support to firefighting services internationally.
Glenrothes Rugby Club
It was great to meet the Glenrothes Rugby Club committee and some of the players. What a fantastic and inclusive local club!

Local sports teams such as the Glenrothes Rugby Club can play a huge role in shaping young peoples' lives and in bringing communities together. The committee discussed a number of topics related to the club and the important role it plays for so many local people.
I'll definitely come back for a match soon!
Glenrothes & Area Heritage Centre
I had a fascinating afternoon catching up with the Glenrothes & Area Heritage Centre at the Kingdom Shopping Centre. The centre is staffed entirely by volunteers and was established by Chair Linda Ballingall in 2013. My thanks to Linda and her team.

As the current exhibition at the Heritage Centre on the history at Tullis Russell has shown, there’s a huge appetite amongst local people to learn more. It’s remarkable that the Heritage Centre offers the service that it does, given that it currently survives only on donations. The service provided is invaluable.
Fife Heritage Railway

I had a lot of fun at a recent visit to the Fife Heritage Railway - what a fantastic team of dedicated folk, working hard to maintain the history of our local railways.

My thanks to Jim, Peter and the rest of the team for showing me around and sharing their knowledge. It was fascinating to hear the story of the first American killed in WW2 - Captain Robert M Losey - who died in a Norwegian carriage that the heritage trust have recently restored. You can learn more about the Captain here:

Visit to North Glen Medical Practice
I was delighted to be hosted by the North Glen Medical Practice, following an invitation by the British Medical Association Scotland to spend some time in a local GP practice to see the work that GP surgeries do first-hand. As a member of the Health & Sport Committee, this was a great chance to discuss the challenges and opportunities at a local and national level in terms of our GP practices. My thanks to Dr McLeod and the team for accommodating my visit.
Visit to Fife College Stenton Campus

It was good to meet Hugh Hall, the Principal of Fife College, on Friday 25th August at the Stenton campus in Glenrothes.

The meeting was a good opportunity to discuss the courses on offer to young people in Glenrothes and Leven.

'Glenrothes Heat' Project with RWE Markinch
It was a pleasure to meet Site Manager Dr Picton (centre), Bob, Jake and David at the RWE Markinch Biomass site to discuss the new "Glenrothes Heat" project. The Scottish Government is directly supporting this district heating plan with £8.5m investment from the Low Carbon Infrastructure Transition Programme.

I’m particularly delighted that this project will offer more employment opportunities to local residents and in a way which seeks to reduce the carbon impact of energy users within the constituency.
Dementia Friendly Glenrothes
Lovely to meet Amanda at Dementia Friendly Glenrothes. This initiative is going lots of great work to promote dementia inclusion throughout Glenrothes. The initiative is a collaboration between Alzheimer Scotland, Fife Council and the Fife Health & Social Care Partnership. I'm delighted to back these significant local efforts to support constituents who may be affected.
Open Day at Gilven House
I recently popped along to the Open Day at Gilven House in Glenrothes, which offered a chance to meet staff and service users. Gilven House is run by the Scottish Christian Alliance and offers support with homelessness, unemployment, mental health and exclusion. The day showcased a great example of social enterprise through craft. Many thanks to Mary and her team for showing me around.
Fife Olympiad 2017

I had a great meeting with the Fife Olympiad volleyball team with David Torrance MSP, prior to the team's participation in the event. The Olympiad tournament was held in Glenrothes' twin-town of  Boblingen in Germany, and saw sports competitors from Fife compete against Boblingen's other twin towns. I was delighted that the Fife Team won the 'fair play' award for their excellent sportsmanship.

89th Fife Scouts & Collydean GirlGuiding Pop Up Cafe
I had a lovely evening with the North Glenrothes Scouts at their first Pop Up Café in Collydean Community Centre recently. This was a great initiative which ran throughout the summer holidays by the 89th Fife Scouts and GirlGuiding Collydean.
