TRADING: A NEW CLIMATE SOLUTION FOR BUILDINGS

Carbon trading for buildings is a breakthrough approach to reduce emissions and fund efficiency upgrades. Trading could be a next step to help buildings meet their carbon caps established by Local Law 97, and NYC is required to study its potential. And while cap and trade is not a new idea, as a city-level policy tool for reducing emissions from buildings, it’s a revolutionary concept.

Our just-released report, Trading: A New Climate Solution for Buildings, comprehensively explores how a carbon trading program can drive retrofit investments in environmental justice areas and achieve deep carbon reductions—while also enabling cost-effective compliance with laws like LL97. Looking at 11 key trading program design questions, this report identifies a full menu of policy options for global cities to consider.

The result of nine months of meetings with leading experts and key stakeholders, this report will help inform the city’s LL97 carbon trading study and launch a new global dialogue with our international partners.
