Quarterly Update on Northside Drive from Astra Group

Hi Neighbors,

My name is Andrew Lindsay and I am the president of Astra Group, Inc., the general contractor responsible for the on-going construction project on Northside Drive between I-75 and the Northside Parkway. We greatly appreciate your patience as you live and work among this construction site. The over 200 construction workers for Astra and its subcontractors have worked hard to improve this corridor. I am proud to announce we are currently months ahead of the January 2018 completion schedule.

This means come next year’s playoff run by the Atlanta Falcons, you will no longer see the fluorescent Astra vests or orange barrels along Northside Drive. The traffic due to construction will be greatly alleviated. After nearly two years of working in your neighborhood, we’ll be leaving you with a more efficient and safe route to your home, work or Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

We began work on Northside Drive in Spring 2015 to install larger, 36-inch water lines to accommodate Buckhead’s growing water needs and to remove reversible lanes for reduced traffic congestion. Upon completion, this $26 million project will positively transform the commuter efficiency of the major artery connecting Buckhead and I-75 while increasing water delivery to the growing number of residents and visitors of Buckhead.

The project has not been free of complications and we greatly appreciate your patience as you live and travel along this construction project. Initially, the project team encountered unforeseen conditions that postponed the start of construction. Utilizing a team approach to design, Astra was able to work with GDOT and the Atlanta Watershed to redesign the project and prevent shutting down Northside Drive completely.  Even with construction back on track, unforeseen rock, sinkholes, poor soils and unmarked utilities have added to the challenge in this narrow traffic corridor. Despite these early setbacks, we remain ahead of the January 2018 completion schedule.

So what has our team of over 200 construction workers accomplished over the past 21 months?

  • 1,800 tons of asphalt
  • 2,900 feet of storm water drainage
  • 12,500 feet of 36” water main
  • 11,000 feet of 12” water distribution lane
  • 4,600 feet of granite curb
  • 16,200 SF of new sidewalks
  • Concrete retaining walls for slope stabilization
  • An elevated boardwalk
  • New signal poles at intersections with underground feed (bored under sidewalks)
As work continues, you will see us completing the following:
  • Storm drainage and small concrete walls on the west side of Northside between Collier and Longwood
  • Peachtree Battle intersection improvements
  • Granite curb installation
  • Sidewalk installation
  • PATH Foundation Trail between Bitsy Grant and Peachtree Creek
  • New traffic signals and pedestrian crossings
  • Asphalt milling and leveling
  • Asphalt finish surface and striping

Please pass on this information to your friends, neighbors, neighborhood associations or NPU representative to help keep your neighborhood informed. We will be providing quarterly updates during the last year of the project. Please subscribe to this newsletter to stay informed in the coming months. We’ll continue to keep you updated on our progress and welcome all comments. We know it hasn’t been easy, and we thank you for your patience.

- Andrew Lindsay

Astra Group, Inc., President

We know you have questions on how we’ve changed your neighborhood, and we would love to answer them all. If we haven’t answered your question here, please email info@astragroupinc.com.

How will my commute be improved from all this construction?

A two-way left turn lane will replace the existing reversible lane from the Interstate 75 interchange to Arden Road. We are also enlarging the intersection at Northside Drive and Collier Road, adding a turn lane east toward Peachtree and installing a dedicated left turn lane going west. Signal upgrades and intersection improvements will take place at the Collier Road, Woodward Way, Peachtree Battle Avenue, West Wesley and Arden Road intersections.

What added safety features will we see along Northside Drive?

Sidewalks on both sides of the road will be extended from Memorial Park to Collier Road.  Along Bobby Jones Golf Course, we are building a 10-foot path including an elevated walkway. We will improve overall storm drainage in the corridor, add guardrail systems, provide additional fire hydrants, and construct retaining walls.  We have repaired two existing hazardous conditions – slope reconstruction and stabilization of the roadway near the stream between I-75 and Springlake.  We also corrected the sinkhole within the roadway encountered just north of Sutton Middle School.  Sidewalks and wheelchair ramps are being constructed to create American Disabilities Act complaint access to neighborhood amenities.

Why has it taken so long?

In one word: Safety. The heavily traveled narrow corridor makes the coordination of work tedious and slow while protecting the traveling public and our workers. We have very specific weather, time and work zone restrictions that prolong construction but keep Northside safe and passable.
It may seem like an eternity, but we are actually ahead of the planned construction schedule. Thank you for your patience and please help us continue to keep everyone safe.
Fortunately, the end is in sight and we are almost out of your rear view mirrors!
