Hey <<First Name>>,

Friday is here! And hopefully most of you got paid today and are enjoying those sweet, sweet stock market returns. If you’re new to the newsletter, welcome to my weekly round-up where I share latest posts, interesting things I see around the web, and top-secret sale stuff I don’t share anywhere else.

LATEST POST
Ever log into Instagram and wonder how everyone else seems to afford to travel? They may not be smarter than you, or richer than you. But they may just be more opportunistic than you. Read about how I’m flying in style to New Zealand.
If you’ve ever had questions on how to travel for less, now’s your time to shine! Let me know in the comments.

A MONEY PODCAST FOR NON-MONEY NERDS
If you’ve ever felt like money terms go completely over your head, check out my new podcast discovery: Moneysplained. It’s hosted by Ally-Jane, who’s a millennial trying to figure out her money, so she asks experts the same questions that you’re probably wondering about, too. Like, what do I do once I get my first job? So if you’re tired of financial information that explain things in overcomplicated terms, then this is worth a listen.

HOW TO PICK YOUR LIFE PARTNER
I’m a big fan of the website “Wait But Why.” Tim writes these super long-form articles (like me, but times 100) on topics that really make you think. I love this one about how to pick a life partner, because as he points out, we don’t think nearly enough about how to choose our life partners. Instead, we think it's more romantic to leave it up to chance. In what kind of warped world should we leave any forever-decision up to chance? As he says, “people tend to be bad at knowing what they want from a relationship...”

LIKE A SOAP OPERA, BUT FOR LITERARY FOLKS
I found out Elena Ferrante is writing again! She wrote the series “My Brilliant Friend,” which I devoured a few summers ago. Her books are like soap operas, except written perfectly, and when the last book ended I got pretty sad it was over. Do you ever have that feeling where you don’t want a book to end? Anyway, if you’re looking to get lost in a world of love and friendship post-war Italy, then check this out.

HOW I GOT 2-DAY FREE SHIPPING
I’m traveling in a few weeks, and I just got saved by ShopRunner. I was able to buy some sweatpants for the plane ride with 2-day shipping, because it’s a free benefit I get from my American Express card. If I wasn’t enrolled in ShopRunner, it means the sweatpants would have arrived while I was already on vacation, which is no bueno. If you’re an American Express card holder, and have a few minutes, it’s worth enrolling. See which stores you can use ShopRunner here.

MY FAVORITE SALES AND DEALS
Acne Canada scarves never go on sale. Like, ever. Until I found this for 30% off. Trigger pulled. But you know, I put it on my Pinterest wishlist first. Gotta abide by the shopping system to avoid impulse purchases!

Reed Krakow isn’t a household name, but he makes a great shoe. I had a pair of lizard oxfords a while back that were impeccably made. I just found these knee high boots in size 37 for $50, which are a total steal. If you’re in the market for a classic boot, and these are your size, they would be a good buy.

I'm going to check out the Louis Vuitton exhibit this weekend, so if we aren't friends on Instagram yet, add me so you can follow along in the stories.

Have an amazing weekend!

How to Effectively Ask for a Raise (from Someone Who’s Done It Twice)

How to Ask for a Raise (and Actually Get It!)

*I’m back in NYC, but jetlagged like crazy, so my friend the Financial Mechanic is here today to talk about the ever-important topic: how to effectively advocate for a raise! There’s a huge gap in content about making more money, and if you’re nervous about asking for a raise (because yeah, it’s terrifying), then who […]

Hello from Southeast Asia: A Postcard from Vietnam and Laos

Southeast Asia Postcard: Hello from Vietnam and Laos

If you’re wondering if I’m still alive, I’ve been traveling through Southeast Asia for the past few weeks, and seemed to have lost track of time. What day is it again? After some social media check-ins, I’ve caught up on a couple of events that have gone down back home: New York City had an […]

Ask Luxe: What Do I Do with My Old 401k (When My New Plan Sucks)?

What Do You Do With an Old 401k?

It’s that time of year when people are thinking about money, because I’ve been getting lots of e-mail lately along the lines of, “Hi Luxe, what would you do if…” I start hammering out a reply, but then I think, hey, I bet other readers are wondering about this same thing. So today I’m test-piloting […]

How My Moth Problem Was a Money Lesson in Disguise

How My Moth Problem Was a Money Lesson in Disguise

I always thought clothes-eating moths were an old wives’ tale. In all my years of being careless I had skated by, scot-free (or shall I say, hole-free?). My friends never seemed to report moth problems, either. Because I had internalized the belief that clothing moths didn’t exist, I was cavalier about how I stored my […]

I Spent $900 on Black Friday Sales and I’m OK With It

I Spent $900 on Black Friday Sales and I'm OK With It

To me Black Friday is just another sale. It’s up to me to wade through the noise and vet whether or not the deals are legit (they’re usually not). 30% off on something that usually goes on sale anyway? Yawn. 30% off on something that never goes on sale? Now we’re talking. There’s a lot […]

The 2018 Holiday Gift Guide: 36 Gift Ideas That Would Impress Even Me

2018 Gift Guide: 36 Ideas to Impress the Hard-to-Please

I’m a gift giver’s worst nightmare. About eight years ago, I asked people to stop buying for me. The reasons were well-intentioned: “I already have everything that I need.” “If I want something, I’m fortunate enough that I can just buy it myself.” “If we’re talking love languages, I’m more of the Acts of Service […]

The Best First-Time Rewards Credit Cards–By Spend-Level & Personality

Best Rewards Credit Cards for Beginners

Have you ever been at a group dinner where everyone except you put down a Chase Sapphire card, and wondered: what do they know that I don’t? Maybe you got your first credit card at your local bank, because you didn’t know other credit cards existed. Or like me, you were a hapless college student […]

What My Life Looked Like on a $58K Income in NYC

What My Life Looked Like on a 58K Income in New York City

I started writing this weeks ago, but then I got self-conscious and decided to scrap it. Doubts told me that this story wasn’t worth talking about. Because $58k is an absurd amount of money for a single person with no real responsibilities. Even in New York City. At least to me. And wouldn’t that be […]

The 10 Wardrobe Essentials I Happily Buy Over and Over Again

10 Wardrobe Essentials I Happily Buy Over and Over Again

Last month, I wrote about the fashion classics everyone says I should buy but don’t. Today I’m flipping the script and talking about the clothes I couldn’t live without. The ones I wear over and over again and constantly re-buy, because they always seem to suit me. There are very few “shoulds” when it comes to […]

My Weekend Money Diary #12: Busted Knees, Wi-Fi, and Apartment Dreams

My Weekend Money Diary #12: Busted Knees, Wi-Fi and Apartment Dreams

What happens when someone who’s “good at money” tracks their spending the old school way? With a pen and paper and not using an automated system like Mint? Inspired by the Man Repeller and Refinery29 money diaries, I thought it’d be fun to see what happens when I track my spending for a weekend. Although I’m conscious about my overall […]
