Hey <<First Name>>,

Friday is here! And hopefully most of you got paid today and are enjoying those sweet, sweet stock market returns. If you’re new to the newsletter, welcome to my weekly round-up where I share latest posts, interesting things I see around the web, and top-secret sale stuff I don’t share anywhere else.

LATEST POST
Ever log into Instagram and wonder how everyone else seems to afford to travel? They may not be smarter than you, or richer than you. But they may just be more opportunistic than you. Read about how I’m flying in style to New Zealand.
If you’ve ever had questions on how to travel for less, now’s your time to shine! Let me know in the comments.

A MONEY PODCAST FOR NON-MONEY NERDS
If you’ve ever felt like money terms go completely over your head, check out my new podcast discovery: Moneysplained. It’s hosted by Ally-Jane, who’s a millennial trying to figure out her money, so she asks experts the same questions that you’re probably wondering about, too. Like, what do I do once I get my first job? So if you’re tired of financial information that explain things in overcomplicated terms, then this is worth a listen.

HOW TO PICK YOUR LIFE PARTNER
I’m a big fan of the website “Wait But Why.” Tim writes these super long-form articles (like me, but times 100) on topics that really make you think. I love this one about how to pick a life partner, because as he points out, we don’t think nearly enough about how to choose our life partners. Instead, we think it's more romantic to leave it up to chance. In what kind of warped world should we leave any forever-decision up to chance? As he says, “people tend to be bad at knowing what they want from a relationship...”

LIKE A SOAP OPERA, BUT FOR LITERARY FOLKS
I found out Elena Ferrante is writing again! She wrote the series “My Brilliant Friend,” which I devoured a few summers ago. Her books are like soap operas, except written perfectly, and when the last book ended I got pretty sad it was over. Do you ever have that feeling where you don’t want a book to end? Anyway, if you’re looking to get lost in a world of love and friendship post-war Italy, then check this out.

HOW I GOT 2-DAY FREE SHIPPING
I’m traveling in a few weeks, and I just got saved by ShopRunner. I was able to buy some sweatpants for the plane ride with 2-day shipping, because it’s a free benefit I get from my American Express card. If I wasn’t enrolled in ShopRunner, it means the sweatpants would have arrived while I was already on vacation, which is no bueno. If you’re an American Express card holder, and have a few minutes, it’s worth enrolling. See which stores you can use ShopRunner here.

MY FAVORITE SALES AND DEALS
Acne Canada scarves never go on sale. Like, ever. Until I found this for 30% off. Trigger pulled. But you know, I put it on my Pinterest wishlist first. Gotta abide by the shopping system to avoid impulse purchases!

Reed Krakow isn’t a household name, but he makes a great shoe. I had a pair of lizard oxfords a while back that were impeccably made. I just found these knee high boots in size 37 for $50, which are a total steal. If you’re in the market for a classic boot, and these are your size, they would be a good buy.

I'm going to check out the Louis Vuitton exhibit this weekend, so if we aren't friends on Instagram yet, add me so you can follow along in the stories.

Have an amazing weekend!

Saving Money Isn’t About Saying No–It’s About Saying Yes

Saving Money Isn't About Saying No, It's About Saying Yes

It started with a picture of a red motorbike. Then a waterfall that looked straight out of Jurassic Park. I casually mentioned to my husband that I’d just discovered this relatively unheard-of area of Laos, where you can rent motorbikes and drive around looking for waterfalls. He was playing online chess, his favorite game, but […]

Acorns Review: Is This Investing App Worth It?

I kept forgetting that I have the Acorns app on my phone. I suppose that’s the whole point. That I was investing money without even trying. Go to any personal finance blog and we’ll all tell you why investing is important and why you need to start doing it as of yesterday. But most of […]

2018 Annual Clothing Roundup: What I Bought in Q3-4 (and a Giveaway)

How Much I Spent on Clothes in 2018

I recently did an Instagram segment on handbags and came to a sober realization: if you put two seemingly identical items in front of me, even with no labels, nine times out of 10 I will always prefer the more expensive option. But when you have expensive taste, how much does that add up to […]

My Weekend Money Diary #13: Beautifying My Life

My Weekend Money Diary #13: Beautifying My Life

What happens when someone who’s “good at money” tracks their spending the old school way? With a pen and paper and not using an automated system like Mint? Inspired by the Man Repeller and Refinery29 money diaries, I thought it’d be fun to see what happens when I track my spending for a weekend. Although I’m conscious about my overall […]

The Money Moves I’m Making in 2019

Money Moves I'm Making in 2019

It seems cliche, but there’s something about the start of a new year that makes you get off your butt and do things. Especially those heinous financial tasks you’ve been putting off forever. And when I say ‘you’ I really mean me. Even though my husband and I don’t have standard debt, and have a […]

My $6,000 Mistake–and How My Credit Card Saved Me

My $6,000 Mistake--and How My Credit Card Saved Me

Here’s a reason why you might want to have an emergency fund. Say you rent a car in LA, decline the insurance, and drop off the car right on time. Per usual. Then the car rental clerk takes you outside to point out a two-inch dent on the passenger-side door. Well, here’s a first: you […]

My Favorite Reader Comments from 2018

One of the best notes I’ve ever received is when someone said they’d always come back to my blog just to read through the comments. So instead of recapping everything I did last year, today I wanted to shift the focus on you guys! Because this blog isn’t anything without the community. Here are my […]

How I Deal When I’m Not 100% Feeling My Job

Jan 28, 2019 09:51 am
What I Do When I’m Not 100% Feeling My Job

I’m writing this on a Sunday, which means that like most people, I’ve got the Sunday Scaries. “I can’t wait until Monday,” said no one ever. As it turns out, 85% of the world isn’t thrilled with their jobs. I obnoxiously fall into the other 15%. My boss is one of the best I’ve ever had, […]

Cost Breakdown: An Elevated Two-Week Trip Through Southeast Asia

Jan 25, 2019 08:54 am
The Cost of a Two-Week Stylish Southeast Asia Trip

Southeast Asia is one of those destinations where I could probably visit over and over again and never get tired of it. Even if I get ripped off. To me, it has it all: mouth-watering food with unique flavor profiles, authentic traditional culture, world-famous natural wonders, and most importantly, it can accommodate a range of […]

How to Effectively Ask for a Raise (from Someone Who’s Done It Twice)

Jan 16, 2019 02:14 pm
How to Ask for a Raise (and Actually Get It!)

*I’m back in NYC, but jetlagged like crazy, so my friend the Financial Mechanic is here today to talk about the ever-important topic: how to effectively advocate for a raise! There’s a huge gap in content about making more money, and if you’re nervous about asking for a raise (because yeah, it’s terrifying), then who […]
